INDIANAPOLIS – Wright State junior first basemann Jake Hibberd (Miamisburg, Ohio) and Youngstown State track and field athlete Alisha Anthony (Van Wert, Ohio) have been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Month for May. Hibberc collects the honor for the first time this season, while Anthony has now captured back-to-back accolades to close the academic year.

Hibberd helped lead Wright State to the Horizon League baseball title, earning Horizon League Player of the Year honors in the process after hitting .407 with 9 home runs and 56 runs batted in. The right-handed slugger was nationally ranked in eight different categories, ranking eighth in the nation with 96 hits while his batting average came in 13th. For his efforts, Hibberd was named a Third Team All-American by Louisville Slugger and Collegiate Baseball.

In the classroom, Hibberd recorded a 3.74 grade point average while majoring in mass communication. An Academic All-Horizon League pick in 2010, Hibberd also earned League Honor Roll accolades last year. This season, Hibberd’s accomplishments off the field made him a Capitol One Second Team All-America pick by CoSIDA.

After winning the April Scholar-Athlete of the Month, Anthony collects again in May after helping Youngstown State to a runner-up finish in the Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Anthony took first in the long jump at 6.02 meters, while placing fourth in both the 100-meter dash (12.18 seconds) and triple jump (11.97 meters). Qualifying for the NCAA East Regional, Anthony was 24th in the long jump, breaking the sand at 5.92 meters.

In her three years of eligibility, Anthony was selected to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for both indoor and outdoor track every year. Holding a 3.80 GPA with an exercise science major, Anthony was a nominee for CoSIDA Track and Field Academic All-America honors.

The Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Month recognizes outstanding academic and athletic achievements. To be eligible for the honor, the student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarters hours and perform well during the month’s competition. Winners are selected by the League’s faculty athletics representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
