INDIANAPOLIS – Wright State junior shortstop Katie Kine (Spokane, Wash.) has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week, while Butler senior pitcher Jennifer Chasteen (Avon, Ind.) has been tabbed the League Pitcher of the Week, for the week beginning Feb. 28.
Kine clubbed Wright State to a 5-2 win over SIU Edwardsville on Saturday as the Raiders split two games that day. The shortstop slugged her second homerun of the three-game tournament, a three-run shot in the sixth inning that provided the game-winning runs.
On Friday, Kine launched a solo shot against Purdue; for the three-game set, the shortstop hit .429 while slugging at a 1.289 clip. The Spokane, Wash.-native recorded all four of her RBI on the long balls.
Chasteen led Butler to its lone win at the Lady Bison Classic, tossing a complete game shutout to lead Butler past Appalachian State, 5-0. The righthander improved to 2-1 on the year, presently holding both of the Bulldogs’ victories in the young season.
In 12.2 innings of work, the Avon H.S.-product has not allowed an earned run. Against Appalachian State, Chasteen struck out seven while walking just one and scattering six hits.
Wright State heads to Rock Hill, S.C., for the Winthrop/adidas Invitational, beginning on Friday, March 11 and running through the weekend. Butler will take a week off before heading to Florida for the Rebel Games. The Bulldogs will play 10 games in six days in Orlando, Fla., beginning on Sunday, March 13.
