INDIANAPOLIS -- Wright State University sophomore Justin Parker (baseball) and Cleveland State University senior Michele Penney (softball) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (May 1).

Parker collected five hits in 13 at-bats (a .385 batting average) last week, helping the Raiders to a 4-1 record. He scored seven runs and drove in four, while also drawing five walks. Parker had three hits including a double in Wright State's 7-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sunday (April 29). He also scored twice and drove in two runs in that game, as well as in the nightcap of Saturday's (April 28) doubleheader.

The academic award is Parker's second Scholar-Athlete of the Week citation this year. In the classroom, Parker owns a 3.564 grade-point average, majoring in organizational leadership. He has garnered Highest Honors (3.50 or better GPA) once and High Honors (3.25 or better GPA) twice, and is a member of the Horizon League's Academic Honor Roll.

Penney batted .500 (five-for-10) as the Vikings recorded their first-ever three-game sweep of the University of Illinois at Chicago last weekend. Her performance included two home runs, a double, four runs scored, and four RBI. Her two-run homer put the Vikings ahead on the way to a 10-9 victory on Saturday (April 28) as CSU rallied from a 4-0 deficit. She also homered in Sunday's series finale, a 4-3 Cleveland State victory.

In the classroom, Penney carries a 3.81 grade-point average as an anthropology major. She was an Academic All-League selection last spring, and has been a member of the Dean's List every semester since coming to CSU. She was also a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll last fall, and represented the university at the 2006 NCAA Leadership Conference.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
