INDIANAPOLIS –Wright State sophomore Lauren Smith (Centerville, OH) is the Horizon League women’s tennis Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 13-19.

The Wright State women’s tennis team opened its 2014 spring season with matches against Akron Saturday, Jan. 18 and IUPUI Sunday, Jan. 19. The team fell to Akron 4-1 at the Five Seasons in Dayton, OH and picked up a 5-2 victory over IUPUI at the South Regency Tennis Center.

Smith tallied three victories over the weekend for the Raiders in both singles and doubles play. Against Akron, Smith defeated Marta Briega in straight-sets 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 6 singles position to record the lone singles win for Wright State on the day.

On Sunday, Smith continued her domination on the court defeating IUPUI’s Julie Brockman in straight-sets 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. At No. 2 doubles play with teammate Tori Turner, the duo came away with a 6-3 win over Bobbi Modesto and Rachael Bridegroom.

Wright State is back in action Saturday, Jan. 25 against SIU Edwardsville at 3:30 p.m. EST at the South Regency Tennis Center.

Top Women’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Anny Davydova, Detroit (Fr.)—Earned her first two collegiate singles wins against Eastern Michigan and Michigan State while playing at the No. 4 singles position.
Ellen Folkers, Cleveland State (So.)—One of two Vikings to pick up a singles win against #49 Penn State, going 1-0 on the day at No. 6 singles.
