Detroit 93, Indiana Tech 50
Detroit went into the holidays with a smile on its face as the Titans dominated from beginning to end in a 93-50 victory over Indiana Tech at historic Calihan Hall.
Four Detroit (6-8) players scored in double figures as the team shot over 50.0 percent from the field (33-of-63), including 13-of-26 from behind the arc, and holding Indiana Tech (10-4) to just 26.7 percent (16-of-60).
Co-captain Juwan Howard Jr. led the way with a game-high 22 points, while Anton Wilson continued his torrid three-point shooting nailing six treys and finishing with 18 points. Patrick Onwenu tallied his first collegiate double-double with a career-best 17 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman Matthew Grant added 10 points and five boards off the bench.
The only time Detroit was behind in the contest was 2-1 before UDM began its onslaught by scoring 11-straight points. It was the 3-point shooting that was hot from the start as Howard hit two in that span as well as one from Carlton Brundidge.
Indiana Tech then scored five in a row to cut the lead to 12-7 at the 15:07 mark, but a 19-3 spurt over the next six minutes by the Titans quickly put the game away as the red, white and blue took a 21-point lead, 31-10.
UDM never looked back as it extended the lead to as many as 34 in the first half, 55-21, before taking a 58-25 advantage at the break.
The Titans shot 61.8 percent (21-of-34) in the first 20 minutes as they also controlled the boards to the tune of a 30-7 advantage.
Detroit started the second half like it ended the first, with an offense push, as Brundidge hit a three and Howard went inside for two for a 63-25 score, and the Titans later ran their lead to 40, 68-28, as senior Jermaine Lippert ignited the fans with a dunk, with 18:05 left.
The Warriors never rallied to even make the game close as they trimmed the lead to 32, 81-49, with 6:32 left, but Detroit ended the game on a 12-1 charge for the 43-point triumph.
Evan Bruinsma ended the game with four points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Jarod Williams totaled nine points, four rebounds and a game and career-high five assists. Lippert totaled six points and four boards and Brundidge netted seven points with two assists and two blocks.
Detroit owned the boards, 49-29, and had a great 24-9 advantage on second chance points.
Cleveland State 89, La Roche 42
Cleveland State shot 59 percent from the floor and had four players in double figures as the Vikings cruised past LaRoche, 89-42, at the Wolstein Center.
The Vikings improved to 7-6 this year, while LaRoche fell to 6-4.
It was the fewest points allowed by the Vikings since a 91-40 win over Notre Dame (Ohio) on Dec. 27, 2008.
The win also moved head coach Gary Waters into sole possession of second place on the all-time wins list at CSU with 143, breaking a tie with Kevin Mackey. Ray Dieringer holds the school record with 149 victories.
Anton Grady paced CSU with 19 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals, while Trey Lewis finished with 17 points, five assists and four rebounds. Bryn Forbes added 16 points, six rebounds and three assists and Sebastian Douglas added 10 points and five assists.
Marlin Mason recorded seven points and four rebounds.
CSU opened with its fifth different starting lineup of the season, as Waters went with Lee, Forbes and Lewis in the backcourt with Marlin Mason and Grady in the front court.
The lineup paid off right away as the Vikings scored 28 of the first 30 points of the game en route to a 44-15 halftime lead.
The Vikings shot 59.4 percent (38-of-64) from the field and assisted on 26 of the 38 baskets and scored 62 points in the paint. CSU out-rebounded the Redhawks, 40-26.
LaRoche shot 33.9 (19-of-56) from the field and was led by Lionel Perkins who scored nine points.
Colorado State 74, UIC 61
UIC dropped a road contest at Colorado State by a final score of 74-61 inside Moby Arena.
Senior Kelsey Barlow managed a game-high 20 points, including 18 in the second half, after sitting the majority of the first period with two quick fouls. Barlow now has four 20-plus point efforts on the season and 11 double-digit scoring performances.
UIC (5-8) hung with Colorado State (8-4) for most of the first half before a late burst took the Rams into the locker room with a 30-23 advantage.
Despite Barlow's return, the Flames were hampered by foul trouble during the second half and were never able to close within a single possession down the stretch.
