Youngstown State Men and Women Take an Early Lead Through Day 1 of #HLTF Championships

Youngstown, Ohio - The Youngstown State men’s and women’s track and field teams got off to quick start and took an early lead through day one of the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships at the WATTS.

For the second consecutive year, Sophomore Isaac Agyemang of Youngstown State led the way in day one the heptathlon with 2,873 points, followed by Tim Holzapfel with 2,855 and Zachary Stadnika with 2821 points. The heptathlon concludes tomorrow morning with the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault and
the 1,000 meter run.

The Pentathlon wrapped up with Youngstown State’s Chenary Lacey accumulating the most points, 3,557, while Tess Nelson and Angela Ciaravino finished right behind.Junior Melissa Kirchoff of Milwaukee earned a first place finish in the women’s long jump event with a mark of 5.8 meters. Teammate Alisha Harper finished in second place with a jump 5.71 meters, while Northern Kentucky’s DeMondrea Starnes finalized the top three spots with finish of 5.63 meters.

Milwaukee’s Nate Scherer and Nate Pozolinski each won league titles in their individual events. Senior Pozolinski cleared 7.35 meters on his second attempt in the men’s long jump. Nate Scherer claimed his first place victory in the men’s pole vault event after clearing 4.61 meters. Dana Tessmer collected first place points for the Golden Grizzlies in the women’s pole vault with a mark of 12 ft.

Youngstown State junior Jaynee Corbett topped the women’s weight throwing event, earning a back-to-back league title with a mark of 18.40 meters. On the other side for the men, Valparaiso’s Andrew Guzek won the weight throw with a heave of 17.78 meters.

Oakland claimed three out of the last four running events on the night, including the men’s and women’s 5,000 meter run and the women’s Distance Medley Relay.  In the 5,000 meter run, junior Jacob Bowman finished first with a time of 14:32.59, while Sammy Mondry finished in a time of 17:23.56. In the distance medley relay, Golden Grizzlies’ Rachel Levy, Odette Ingall, Kailey Weingartz and Ashley Burr placed first with a time of 12:18.42.

Valparaiso earned the final win of the night with a first place finish from Jack Mader, Bryce Otterbach, Ben Zibricky, and Alexander Bruno in the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 10:06.59.

The final day of the championships will take place Sunday kicking off with the final three events of the men’s heptathlon at 9:00 am ET, followed by field events at 11:00 am ET and the finals of the running events at 1:00 pm ET. Events will be carried live on ESPN3.
