LEXINGTON, Ky. - Youngstown State University claimed the 2009 Horizon League Women's Golf Championship Sunday, finishing the tournament 17 strokes ahead of runner-up Cleveland State. YSU's Samantha Formeck captured tournament medalist honors, winning with a score of 239 (78-82-79=239). It marked the second team championship for the Penguins, who previously won the championship in 2004.

YSU (331-319-318=968), which led by 12 strokes heading into third round, extended its lead on the final day by five strokes. The Penguins had three of the top five finishers in the event, led by Formeck, Brittany Stillwagon (84-79-78=241) and Katie Rogner (83-75-84=242).

Formeck, a freshman from Northern Cambria, Pa., was also named Horizon League player and newcomer of the year. YSU's Roseann Schwartz was named Horizon League Coach of the Year.

Stillwagon tied for second along with Cleveland State's Mallory Wyderka and Loyola's Nikki Miller. Butler's Lauren Showers, Cleveland State's Katie Broere and YSU's Rogner each tied for fifth in the individual standings, three strokes behind Formeck.

The 54-hole Horizon League Men's Golf Championship tees off at 8 a.m. Monday, April 27.
