Youngstown State Wins Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State claimed both the men’s and women’s team title at the 2017 Horizon League Track and Field Championships at Farmers National Bank Field in Youngstown, Ohio. The Penguins won their fourth consecutive championship on the women’s side and a second straight on the men’s side. The team title was the 10th Horizon League Championship for the Youngstown State women and the third all-time victory for the YSU men.

Day Three Event Final Recaps
Women’s Hammer 
Nicolette Kreatsoulas of Youngstown State claimed the women’s hammer throw title with a throw of nearly three-and-a-half meters better than the field (51.62m – 169-04). Jaynee Corbett of Youngstown State threw the second-best distance (48.24m – 158-03) and Brynne Gustafson of Detroit Mercy took third place with a throw of 48.11m (157-10).

Men’s Hammer 
Tyler Beeson of Oakland finished on top of the competitive men’s hammer throw with a toss of 52.73m (173-00) to win the Horizon League crown. Jamar Manning of Milwaukee was the runner-up with a throw of 52.65m (172-09) while Mathew Monroe of Youngstown State earned a third-place finish (52.47m – 172-02).

Women’s Triple Jump 
DeMondrea Starnes of Northern Kentucky leapt her way to the women’s triple jump crown with a best effort of 12.18m (39-11.50). The senior was followed by Youngstown State’s Savannah Osborne (12.03m) and Chandler Killins of Youngstown State (12.02m).

Men’s Triple Jump 
UIC’s Shaun Wollenweber was the only man to surpass 15 meters in the men’s triple jump and is the Horizon League champion with a leap of 15.20m (49-10.50). Tri Pham of Milwaukee came in second place with a 14.85m (48-08.75) effort, just ahead of UIC’s Larnell Brown (14.80m – 48-06.75).

Men’s High Jump 
Freshman Jason Hanson of Milwaukee equaled the facility record of 2.09m (6-10.25) to win the men’s high jump. Youngstown State freshman Brad Jones cleared the bar at 2.06m (6-09.00) to earn second place and Brady Irwin gave Milwaukee two in the top three with his leap of 2.03m (6-08.00).

Women’s 4x100 Relay 
Detroit Mercy’s quartet of Alexandra Carnathan, Kyri Jackson, Brogan Holmes and Alyson Hamilton ran a 48.49 in the women’s 4x100m relay to edge Milwaukee (48.62) for the Horizon League Championship. Northern Kentucky (49.27) claimed third place.

Men’s 4x100 Relay 
Milwaukee set a new facility record in the men’s 4x100 relay to claim the Horizon League title in a time of 41.48. The Panthers’ team of Konner Fierek, Taylor Koss, Nick Stugelmeyer and Nate Pozolinski outran UIC (41.84) and Youngstown State (42.22) to earn the crown.

Women’s 1,500m 
Elizabeth Owen of Valparaiso pulled away in the final stretch to win the women’s 1,500m run. Owen finished with a time of 4:46.60 to outdistance a pair of Oakland runners: Rachel Levy (4:48.02) and Kailey Weingartz (4:48.13).

Men’s 1,500m 
Andre Schille of Northern Kentucky established a new facility record in the men’s 1,500m run to claim the Horizon League title in 3:55.47. Kyle Hauser of UIC took runner-up honors (3:56.86), a tick ahead of Oakland’s Jacob Bowman (3:56.87).

Women’s 100m Hurdles 
Amber Eles of Youngstown State posted a facility record and a winning time of 13.71 in the women’s 100m hurdles to edge Milwaukee’s Melissa Kirchoff, who crossed the line in 13.86. Taylor McDonald of Youngstown State placed third in the final with a time of 14.34.

Men’s 110m Hurdles 
The premier event of the Horizon League Championship did not disappoint as Chad Zallow of Youngstown State, the nation’s top-ranked 110m Hurdler, crossed the finish line .006 seconds ahead of Milwaukee’s Nate Pozolinkski, who owns the nation’s 14th-best time in the nation. Zallow finished in 13.782 seconds, while Pozolinski crossed in 13.788. Konner Fierek of Milwaukee earned third place with a time of 14.3.

Women’s 400m 
Kate Novacek of Milwaukee earned the women’s 400m title with a run of 55.38 to set a new facility record and topped the field by more than a second and a half. BriAuna Keys of Northern Kentucky ran a 57.03 to place second while Keishawnna Burts of Youngstown State took third in 57.65.

Men’s 400m 
Corey Goodloe of Oakland used a late burst in the men’s 400m dash to claim the Horizon League title with a time of 48.64 to edge out Milwaukee’s Kyle Becker (48.84). Brendan Lucas of Youngstown State placed third with a run of 49.17.

Women’s 100m 
Jaliyah Elliot of Youngstown State won the title of fastest woman in the Horizon League by besting the field in the women’s 100m dash. Elliot ran 11.71 to top teammate Taylor Thompkins (11.88) and Oakland’s Kendell Jefferson (11.91)

Men’s 100m 
Youngstown State’s Chad Zallow won a tightly contested men’s 100m dash, hitting the tape at 10.59, just ahead of his brother and teammate Carl Zallow (10.63) and Oakland’s Aaron Davis (10.71).

Women’s 800m 
Jessica Doepker of Wright State pulled away from the field in the women’s 800m run, crossing the line with a time of 2:18.25 – nearly two seconds better than the field. Victoria Angelopoulos of Wright State made it a one-two sweep for the Raiders with her time of 2:20.17. Milwaukee’s Leah Johnson finished in third place (2:22.17).

Men’s 800m 
Austin Dawn of Oakland had enough to hold off a competitive field in the men’s 800m run, finishing in 2:01.92 to earn the top spot on the podium. Just 1.11 seconds separated the eight finalists. Milwaukee’s Garrett Miller (2:02.3) and Alex Cotter (2:02.32) took second- and third-place, respectively.

Women’s 400m Hurdles 
Taylor McDonald of Youngstown State was the class of the women’s 400m hurdles field, winning by more than 2.5 seconds to earn the Horizon League crown with a time of 1:00.91. Alexandria Derkacs of Cleveland State was the runner-up with a time of 1:03.43. Third place went to Wright State’s Brooklyn Mikesell, who crossed just a hundredth of a second behind Derkacs in 1:03.44.

Men’s 400m Hurdles 
Freshman Collin Harden of Youngstown State won the men’s 400m hurdles in 52.03 seconds, more than two seconds better than the field. Taylor Koss of Milwaukee (54.05) edged Tre Brown of Oakland (54.07) for second place.

Women’s 200m 
Jaliyah Elliot of Youngstown State finished off the 100-200 double in impressive fashion, finishing in 24.3 and .71 seconds ahead of the field. Kendell Jefferson of Oakland (25.01) was the runner-up, edging out Youngstown State’s Keishawnna Burts (25.02).

Men’s 200m 
Oakland senior Aaron Davis got the best of the men’s 200m competitors, turning in a 21.49 to claim the Horizon League title. Carl Zallow of Youngstown State (21.75) claimed runner-up honors, while YSU’s Brendan Lucas (21.88) placed third.

Women’s 5,000m 
It was a clean sweep of the top three positions in the women’s 5,000m run for Oakland, with Rachel Levy setting the standing pace with a winning time of 17:01.70. Ashley Burr crossed the line in 17:08.00 to earn runner-up honors and Miranda Haas finished in 17:18.27, good for third place.

Men’s 5,000m 
Bryce Stroede of Oakland claimed the men’s 5,000m title with a time of 14:44.74 to set a new facility record. Stroede led the way for teammate Jacob Bowman, who finished in 14:48.88 and in second place. Youngstown State’s Ryan Roush earned a third-place finish with his 14:49.20.

Women’s 4x400m Relay 
Youngstown State won the women’s 4x400 relay with a time of 3:51.62 to set a new facility record and outdistance Milwaukee (3:52.19). Northern Kentucky’s 3:54.52 was good for third place.

Men’s 4x400m Relay 
Oakland was the class of the field in the men’s 4x400 relay, crossing the line in 3:20.99 with Zack Joyce, Tre Brown, Austin Davis and Corey Goodloe. Milwaukee (3:22.95) took second place and UIC (3:23.85) was third.
