Youngstown State's Corbett and Zallow Named Alfreeda Goff Indoor Track Athletes of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS – Youngstown State senior Jaynee Corbett and sophomore Chad Zallow have been named the 2017 Alfreeda Goff Athletes of the Year for the Indoor Track and Field season.  For 16 years, Alfreeda Goff was employed at the Horizon League as Senior Associate Commissioner.  She worked tirelessly to enhance the student-athlete championship experience, including track & field athletes.  Prior to entering athletic administration, Alfreeda was the track and field coach at the University of Pittsburgh. The award was voted on by league coaches for the top individual performances throughout the regular season leading up to the championships.

Corbett set numerous personal records throughout the season leading up to the Horizon League Championship. The senior started off collecting wins at the YSU Icebreaker in the shot put and in the weight throw. Prior to the championship, Corbett recorded a league best shot put mark of 14.60 meters at the Akron Invitational. A distance of 17.45 meters topped all league competitors this season in the weight throw, which Corbett registered at the PSU National Invitational. The criminal justice major won the Akron Innovational weight throw with a toss of 17.35 meters, and also earned a first place finish at the YSU college invitational with a shot put toss of 13.79 meters.

Zallow was voted the league’s top men’s performer for the second year sear straight. This season Zallow recorded the second fastest time of the year in NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field. The sophomore was awarded the 2017 Dr. Phillip Edwards Award as the outstanding male competitor at the Amory National Track Invitational after winning the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.61 seconds. The Warren, Ohio native won five additional 60 meter hurdle events throughout the regular season including the SPIRE Division I Invitational and the Akron Zips Invitational where he tied his career-best finish of 7.61 seconds. Zallow also earned first place 60 meter hurdle finishes in the YSU National Invitational, Kent State Golden Flash Gala, and the YSU Icebreaker. One of Zallow’s biggest highlights of the season came when he set a USATF Under-19 record in the 42-inch hurdles. As a result he was able to snap the previously held record by Robert Gaines in 1976, and Jason Richardson in 2005.

Corbett and Zallow also had impressive showings in the Horizon League championship where the two won a combined total of five individual events. Corbett was crowned shot put and weight throw champion with a season-best heave of 14.91 meters and a career-best throw of 18.40 meters. Zallow repeated his league best time of 7.61 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles and was also awarded first place finishes in the 60 meter dash and 200 meter dash.  Both his 60 meter hurdle performance and 60 meter dash time of 6.77 seconds resulted in meet records.  Both Corbett and Zallow were recipientsof the Championship Outstanding Performers Award and were also voted on to the All-Academic Team.
