Youngstown, Ohio - Youngstown State thrower Jarrod Davis has been named First-Team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Tuesday.

Davis is the first ever YSU track and field athlete to earn Academic All-America accolades, and he is the school's first honoree since football player Scott Thiessen in 2003. Davis also became the first track and field athlete to be named First-Team Academic All-District earlier this month, and he joins second-team selections Abby Ettenhofer (volleyball) and Brandon Caipen (baseball) to form the first trio in school history to earn Academic All-America honors in the same season.

"This is a credit to Jarrod's phenomenal work ethic and drive to be the best in every challenge he takes on," head coach Brian Gorby said. "The track program has always been about breaking down barriers, and Jarrod is a great representative, both in the classroom and in the field. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered."

Davis, a native of East Canton, Ohio, is a four-time Academic All-Horizon League selection and was named Outstanding Field Performer at both the Indoor and Outdoor Horizon League Championships this season. In the outdoor campaign, he won the League individual title in the hammer with a league-record mark and took the top spot in the javelin. He also hit the NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying mark four times during the season to become the first YSU thrower to automatically qualify for the meet. Davis finished his career as the school-record holder in the hammer and the second-best performer in the discus and javelin.

Earlier this year he ended an impressive indoor season by winning the weight throw with a meet-record mark and placing second in the shot put at the Horizon League Championship to be named Outstanding Field Performer. During the year he became the first-ever YSU athlete to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championship in a field event, and he was named the Horizon League Athlete of the Week in December. Davis finished his indoor career as the school-record holder in both the weight throw and the shot put.

Davis earned his bachelor's degree in computer information systems in May 2005 and holds a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in his graduate classes.
