INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State University baseball player Phil Klein and women's golfer Brittany Stillwagon have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Month for April, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Friday (May 8).

Klein (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln), a sophomore righthander, went 2-0 with a 3.45 earned-run average in four starts during April. He struck out 25 in 28 1/3 innings in earning victories over Butler University April 5 and Cleveland State University April 12.

In the classroom, Klein carries a 3.81 grade-point average as a finance major at Youngstown State. He previously earned Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors on April 20.

Stillwagon (Bloomingdale, Ohio/Steubenville Central Catholic), a junior, finished second at the Horizon League Women's Golf Championships April 25-26 -- two strokes behind teammate Samantha Formeck -- to help the Penguins capture their second conference title and first since 2003. She carded a three-round total of 241 with rounds of 84, 79 and 78.

An electrical engineering major, Stillwagon owns a 3.64 grade-point average at Youngstown State, including a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall 2008 semester.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
