INDIANAPOLIS – Youngstown State senior Kendrick Perry and junior Heidi Schlegel have been named the Horizon League’s Scholar-Athletes of the Month for January.
Perry carries a 3.46 GPA as a criminal justice major. In 2012-13, he was an Academic All-Horizon League honoree and named the Youngstown State Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Perry led the Penguins on the court in January averaging 18.7 points per game over the seven contests. In a victory against Cleveland State, he scored a high of 31 points and had a 23 point performance in a win at UIC. The senior scored 131 points, dished out 26 assists, collected 27 rebounds and tallied 16 steals in the month. During this time, Perry also shot 51.9 percent from the field (41-of-79).
Schlegel is a middle childhood education major and carries a 3.74 overall GPA. She completed the 2013 fall semester with a 4.0 GPA was also a member of the Horizon League Honor Roll in the fall and spring of 2012-13.
Over the course of seven games in January, Schlegel averaged 19.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest. Of the seven games, she had four 20-plus point performances, three of which coming against League opponents. In the 20-plus point games, the junior scored 28 in a win at UIC, 25 in a victory over Oakland, 22 against IUPUI and 20 defeating Milwaukee. Against Valparaiso, Schlegel led the Penguins to victory with 19 points and 19 rebounds. During the month, she scored 137 points, grabbed 62 rebounds, had 9 assists and 11 steals. Overall, Youngstown State went 6-1 in January while opening League play 6-0 to mark the best start in school history including a first-ever home win over Green Bay.
The Youngstown State basketball teams have a double-header at home Saturday, Feb. 15 with the women facing Valparaiso at 4:35 p.m. followed by the men taking on UIC at 7:05 p.m. Both games will be streamed on the Horizon League Network.
