Youngstown State rolled past visiting Geneva, while Green Bay’s road woes continued in a loss at Tennessee Tech.
Youngstown State 93, Geneva 50
Youngstown State scored 30 of the final 40 points in the first half, cruising to a 93-50 win over visiting Geneva at the Beeghly Center.
All 12 players who appeared in the game for Youngstown State (5-4) scored, as Bobby Hain led all scorers with 16 points. Hain was one of four Penguins in double figures, while five other players finished with at least five points.
The Penguins made 13 of their first 17 field-goal attempts in the second half and shot 50.7 percent for the game. Hain was an efficient 8-for-12, and Blake Allen was 6-for-9 and finished with 15 points in 21 minutes.
The Penguins scored the first four points of the game and led 9-3 on a Kendrick Perry bucket at the 16:37 mark. Brian Rice hit a bucket for Geneva to cut the score to 9-7 less than a minute later, and Geneva trailed just 17-14 eight minutes into the game.
Hain made a jumper on YSU's next possession to start an 8-0 run, and the Penguins closed out the half on a 30-10 spurt. Hain's bucket at the 3:05 mark put the Guins up by 20 at 42-22, and his basket with 1:41 remaining gave YSU its 47-24 halftime lead.
A Perry layup gave the Penguins a 30-point advantage less than three minutes into the second half, and Ryan Weber’s dunk with 13:08 left was part of a 12-0 run that gave YSU its first 40-point advantage. A Fletcher Larson bucket with 9:38 remaining gave the Penguins their largest lead of the night at 81-35. Danny Resse connected on a 3-pointer in the final minute for the game's final score. It was his second triple of the evening.
Perry finished with 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds in 24 minutes, and Shawn Amiker had 10 points and five assists. Both had dunks in the first seven minutes of the second half that brought the crowd to its feet. Damian Eargle added nine points, five rebounds and five blocks. YSU posted 30 assists and just nine turnovers as a team.
Tennessee Tech 74, Green Bay 68
Green Bay battled back from a nine-point second half deficit to tie the game with 2:59 to play, but could not make the plays down the stretch, as host Tennessee Tech knocked off the Phoenix, 74-68.
Green Bay (3-5) dropped its fourth true road game this season; the Phoenix are 1-5 away from the Resch Center through the first four weeks of the season.
Leading 38-36 at the half, Green Bay found itself behind, 44-38, just 2:50 into the second half, as Tennessee Tech opened the half on a 7-0 run. The Golden Eagle lead grew to 49-40 after two Jud Dillard free throws with 15:15 to play.
Dillard finished the game with 23 points.
Green Bay’s deficit remained nine with 11:05 remaining before the Phoenix rallied in the game’s last 10 minutes. Keifer Sykes and Brennan Cougill keyed the run, scoring 15 of Green Bay’s next 17 points, enabling the Phoenix to tie the game at 61 with 4:10 to play.
Sykes split free throws with 2:59 remaining to tie the game, but Lanerryl Johnson immediately got to the rim to restore Tennessee Tech’s lead to 66-64.
After two free throw gave the Golden Eagles a four-point lead, Sykes went to the rim for a layup to slice the deficit in half, 68-66, with 52 seconds left.
However, needing a stop to have a chance at a game-winning or game-tying basket, Green Bay allowed Johnson to break down the defense in the waning seconds of the shot clock, and his layup put Tennessee Tech up four with 24 ticks left. Johnson finished with 22 points.
Green Bay would turn the ball over on the subsequent possession, allowing Tennessee Tech to close the game.
Sykes led the Phoenix with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while Cougill added 17 in just 23 minutes of play.
