Women’s Soccer Results (Sept. 29)
Youngstown State 2, Milwaukee 1

INDIANAPOLIS – Youngstown State raised eyebrows with four straight wins to start the year. After a four-match skid, the Penguins were back to .500; however, a win over defending champion Milwaukee served notice that YSU is to be reckoned with in the Horizon League.

Youngstown State (6-4-0, 1-0-0 Horizon) won its Horizon League opener, matching the 1997 and 1999 squads for the most victories in a season. The Penguins also won its first Horizon League opener since joining the league in 2001.

Milwaukee falls to 2-7-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the Horizon League.

Jade Flory scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal and assisted on Chelsey Haney’s fourth goal of the season to lead the Penguins' offensive charge.

Jackie Podolsky recorded four saves, including two impressive diving saves, to pick up her second victory of the season.

The Guins took a 1-0 edge just 8:37 into the match when Haney received a pass from Flory through the Panther defense and chipped a shot over the head of UWM goalkeeper Jamie Forbes from just inside the penalty box.

Just a few minutes into the second half, the Guins had a chance to make a major blow to the Panthers but Forbes stopped a Flory penalty kick at the 48:59 mark of the match.

The Panthers had a chance to equalize with a penalty kick of their own, but Podolsky denied Forbes' attempt and the Guins held onto the lead.

Rachel Morrison found Flory on a low-crossing pass through the defense and Flory chipped in a shot from 25-yards out at the 69:08 mark to put the Guins up 2-0.

With just under 20 minutes left, the Panthers cut the Guins lead in half when Krissy Dorre intercepted a pass back to the Podolsky and found the lower-left corner of the net.

The Guins outshot the Panthers, 15-9, including a 10-4 edge in the second half, and took six corner kicks to Milwaukee's five.
