Horizon League Track & Field Championships -- Day 2 Results | Cumulative Championship Results
VALPARAISO, Ind. – High winds and lower temperatures came to Warren G. Hoger Track on Saturday for the Horizon League Track and Field Championships, but it did not deter student-athletes from adding to the League record book.
Arnaldo Morales of Youngstown State posted a new record in the high jump, clearing the bar at 2.15 meters to snap the old mark of 2.11 meters. For Morales, it was his third consecutive outdoor high jump title, making him the third high-jumper in League history to win at least three consecutive titles in the event.
In the 200 meter prelims, YSU’s Leighton Antonio set a new League mark, crossing the line in 21.10 to lower the record by .03 second.
After two days of the championship, Youngstown State leads going into the final day by a 25-point margin over Milwaukee, 99-74. Milwaukee and Youngstown State are tied on the women’s side, each with 71 points.
With high winds blowing across the track, Connor Hickey of Valparaiso rallied in the 1,500 meters to take the decathlon, scoring 5,774 points to narrowly get past Milwaukee’s Noah Meeteer, who finished with 5,753.
The heptathlon also came down to the final event, as Emily Grubb rallied for a second-place finish in the 800 meters, allowing her to best Detroit’s Aisha Potts-Tyre by 38 points. Grubb’s victory was the first outdoor championship for a Northern Kentucky student-athlete since they joined the Horizon League.
While the majority of track events held prelims, field events were wrapping up. In the men’s discus, Silas Petrie took the top spot on the podium with a toss of 48.10 meters.
On the women’s side, Jayne Corbett continued to dominate the throws. A day after setting a new League record in the shot put, Corbett threw a 45.52 meters in the discus to capture the top spot.
In the high jump, Milwaukee’s Alize Souter cleared at 1.71 meters, as did Oakland’s Whitney Mergens. However, Souter’s clearance came in her second attempt, giving her the first-place finish.
Milwaukee’s Nate Pozolinksi added to the Panthers’ podium haul, outclassing the long jump field. Pozolinski posted a distance of 7.28 meters in his second-to-last jump, winning by over .20 meters (8.25 inches). For Pozolinski, it was his second consecutive title in the outdoor long jump.
It was a freshman on the women’s side of the long jump who captured the title, as Youngstown State’s Chontel Fils hit 5.79 meters to capture the title in her first attempt.
Under the lights, Andrew Bowman captured the steeplechase in 8:59.01, capping a 1-2 Oakland finish with teammate George O’Connor (9:02.13). Kailey Weingartz made it a sweep for the Golden Grizzlies, winning in 10:50.74, just in front of teammate Ashley Burr in another 1-2 Oakland finish.
The final day of the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championship will begin at 10 a.m. CT on Sunday, May 8.
