YSU's Klein, Butler's Jackson Honored as U.S. Army Scholar-Athletes of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State University baseball player Phil Klein and Butler University softball player Erin Jackson have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 12, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Friday (April 17).
Klein (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln), a sophomore right-handed pitcher, threw seven scoreless innings to earn his second win in as many starts in Youngstown State's 1-0 victory over Cleveland State Sunday. He struck out a career-high eight batters while allowing only five hits and three walks. In his last four outings, Klein has allowed only two earned runs spanning 21 innings.
In the classroom, Klein carries a 3.81 grade-point average as a finance major at Youngstown State.
Jackson (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine), a sophomore outfielder, batted .294 to help Butler to wins in four of six Horizon League games last week, including a three-game sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. She had a double, two runs-batted-in and three runs scored during the week while handling six chances in the outfield without an error.
A marketing major, Jackson owns a 3.447 grade-point average at Butler. She was named to the Butler Athletic Director's Honor Roll for the fall semester.
The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
