DETROIT – The UIC men’s soccer team picked up its third-straight win on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 victory at Detroit as the Flames improve to 9-3-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Horizon League. Seniors Slobodan Aleksov and Bob Novak netted goals for UIC as freshman goalie Andrew Putna collected his seventh shutout of the season.

In the opening minutes of the contest UIC was leading the Titans in shots 5-0, and 8-0 in corner kicks. In fact, the Flames had a series of five corner kicks in the span of a minute and forty seconds.
It took some time for Detroit (2-6-4, 0-3 HL) to put something together for a run at goal, and about midway through the match the Titans began to gather some nice runs. However, after a Titan corner, UIC was off and running once again and forced UDM into a costly penalty into the box.
Aleksov struck first at the 27:04 mark in the opening period as he converted off a penalty kick. The Serbia native now owns five goals on the season which leads the team. He also accumulated six total shots on the day, including three on target.
Novak scored at the 77:19 mark in the second half as he took a pass from junior Jesus Torres and connected on a boot from 15 yards out to seal the 2-0 final tally. Novak collects his third goal on the season, while Torres continues to lead the league in assists, owning seven on the year.
Putna racked up his league-leading seventh shutout versus the Titans as he added three saves on the afternoon, bringing his 2013 count to 27. Putna’s seven shutouts also ranks tied-for-fourth in single-season program history.
The Flames’ offense was all over the Titan defense, outshooting Detroit 18-9, including eight kicks on goal. UIC has won all four non-home contests so far the season, outscoring those opponents 7-0.

Milwaukee 1, Valparaiso 0
VALPARAISO, Ind. - Junior Luke Goodnetter netted the game-winning goal and freshman Liam Anderson recorded another shutout to send the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Valparaiso University Saturday night at Brown Field.
The 24th-ranked Panthers (10-1-1, 3-1-0 Horizon League) scored early against the Crusaders (3-4-5, 0-3-1 Horizon League) and picked up their sixth shutout of the season to claim the important conference victory on the road.
Goodnetter's goal was as good as they come, volleying in a blast from over 30 yards away at the 14:31 mark for his first of the season.
Junior Rami Younes had the ball on the end line and chipped a shot in front of goal. It was headed out to Goodnetter, who blasted it with his left foot to the upper corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
After conceding the goal, the Crusaders continued to pressure the Panthers and create quality chances. Nick Suker (Downers Grove, Ill./South) was able to serve several dangerous balls into the Panther penalty area, but the chances he created would go begging as they missed the final touch needed to level the game at 1-1.
UWM had numerous chances to add a second goal but could never find the back of the net. Senior James Ashcroft had a pair of opportunities in the final minute, but some impressive defense stopped both. They both came after Valpo sent their goalie forward and had an open net. Ashcroft gained possession and sent a ball towards the net, but a Crusader defender sprinted over 40 yards to stop it just before it crossed the end line. Seconds later, Ashcroft had another crack at it, but the retreating goalkeeper got a hand on it to punch it way.
Valparaiso ended the first half with a 9-to-3 advantage in shots, but only had a pair that made it all the way to the goalkeeper. Anderson made a nice diving save on a shot from distance in the eighth minute, popping up quickly to corral the deflection in front of an open net. His only other save came on an easy stop off a free kick right at him in the 36th minute.
Milwaukee was credited with just three shots prior to intermission, but nearly had a pair of goals. In addition to Goodnetter's strike, Boyd nearly had goal in the 18th minute. After picking up a long ball and making several moves past the backline defense, his attempt from the top of the 18 was stopped with a diving attempt by the Valpo keeper.
In the second half, Valpo pushed numbers forward in hopes of finding the equalizer. Much like the first half, the services were there but the Crusader men unable to finish their chances. Jordan Aidoud (Lyon, France/CEFAM) and Zane Wold (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) created several great chances apiece by serving balls into the penalty area.
UWM ended with a 14-to-11 advantage in shots, with Valpo earning eight of the 12 corner kicks and 12 of the 25 fouls. Bell had his goal-scoring streak snapped at five games, the longest streak by a Panther since 2004.
The Panthers will play just one game next week, but it will be a tough one as they head to Chicago to take on UIC Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Flames are 9-3-0 on the year - 2-0 in league play - and have been ranked in the regional poll most of the season.
Valparaiso (3-4-5) returns to action this Wednesday, October 16. The Crusaders travel to Lexington, Ky. to take on the Wildcats. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Live stats for the match will be available through ValpoAthletics.com.
