2013 Lou Henson Preseason All-America Team
BOSTON, Mass. – Oakland senior guard Travis Bader (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and Youngstown State senior guard Kendrick Perry (Ocoee, Fla./Edgewater) were both named to the Lou Henson Preseason All-America Team, CollegeInsider.com announced on Wednesday.
The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in Division I college basketball. The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years.
Coming off a season in which he hit 139 3-pointers, setting Oakland and Summit League records, Bader enters his first season in the Horizon League rated as the top 3-point shooter in the country and eighth-best scorer in college basketball by Bleacher Report.
With 1,670 career points, Bader enters his senior year 13th in school history; Bader’s 886 3-point attempts sit 307 from the NCAA all-time record, and the marksman needs 101 3-pointers to break J.J. Redick’s NCAA career record of 457. Bader has converted at least one 3-pointer in 53 consecutive games, the longest streak in the country entering the 2013-14 season.
Perry enters his senior season with a chance to become just the 13th player in Horizon League history to be a three-time First Team All-League selection. After averaging 17.3 points per game his junior year, Perry sits 86th on the all-time League scoring ledger with 1,309 career points.
Pegged the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year by Blue Ribbon Sports and TheHoopsReport.com, Perry was named a Top Ten Mid-Major Point Guards to Watch in 2013-14 by MidMajorMadness.com and ranked No. 17 on Bleacher Report’s Top 20 Mid-Major Stars in 2013-14.
Perry is the only returning player in the Horizon League that ranked in the top 10 in scoring (2nd - 17.3 ppg), steals (t-1st - 1.9 spg), assist-to-turnover ratio (3rd - 2.0), free-throw percentage (5th - .845), assists (6th - 4.1 apg), and rebounding (t-8th - 5.5 rpg).
Bader and Perry squared off in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament last year, with Youngstown State emerging with a 99-87 victory. Perry led all scorers with 31 points, going 9-of-18 from the floor and 6-of-10 from 3-point range. Bader countered with 30 points to lead Oakland, knocking down 5-of-11 3-pointers.
In previous years, Horizon League standouts Ray McCallum, Ryan Broekhoff, Matt Howard and Shelvin Mack have been among the organization's honorees.
