Cleveland State, UIC and Youngstown State got their holiday weekends off to good starts as all three teams were victorious on Friday night.
Cleveland State 72, Western Michigan 66 (OT)
The Vikings ended their two-game skid with a 72-66 overtime win over host Western Michigan. CSU opened the overtime period with a 7-0 run to take control and never looked back.
Janelle Adams led four Viking players in double-figures with 18 points. Also scoring in double figures for CSU were Honesty King, Shalonda Winton and Takima Keane. King, who knocked down a three-pointer with four seconds left to tie the game, added 15 points and four steals, while Winton tallied 16 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and Keane added 10 points.
The Vikings will return to action Sunday when they host Cornell in a 2:00 p.m. ET contest at the Wolstein Center.
UIC 67, Central Methodist 46
UIC moved to 4-1 on the season with a 67-46 win over Central Methodist. Jasmine Bailey, fresh off last week’s Player-of-the-Week honors after posting back-to-back 30 point games, had 25 points, seven assists and a career-high 17 rebounds to lead the Flames.
After a back-and-forth first five minutes of the game, UIC took control and never relinquished the lead. UIC pulled down 24 offensive rebounds and outrebounded Central Methodist by 27.
Senior Cree Nix, playing in her first game this season for UIC, had 15 points.
UIC returns to action Monday when it travels to Bloomington, Ill., to take on Illinois State at Redbird Arena beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
Youngstown State 64, Loyola Marymount 50
Youngstown State defeated host Loyola Marymount 64-50 in the first game of the DoubleTree L.A. Westside Thanksgiving Classic.
Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year Brandi Brown led the Penguins with 19 points and 14 rebounds as she went over 1,000 career points in the victory. Her 1,000th career point came on a free throw early in the first half to give YSU a 7-6 lead and the Penguins never trailed again.
YSU led 33-24 at halftime and eventually led by as much as 18 points in the second half.
Sophomore Heidi Schlegel also had a double-double posting 17 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. She also passed out a team-high five assists.
Youngstown State takes on Northern Iowa Saturday in the championship game at 6:15 p.m. ET.
Nevada 71, Butler 69
Nevada scored on a putback basket with 6.1 seconds remaining to defeat Butler, 71-69, in the opening game of the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nevada.
Freshman Haley Howard, coming off the bench, had a career-high 19 points for Butler, shooting 7-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Sarah Hamm had 15 points and a team-high six rebounds for the Bulldogs and Terra Burns was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 11 points and a team-high three steals.
Butler held a 44-41 lead at halftime as the game was close throughout. The Bulldogs shot 42.4 percent from the field, including 47.1 percent from three-point range, but Nevada countered by shooting 52 percent from the field.
The Bulldogs face Iowa State in Saturday's consolation game starting at 8:00 p.m ET.
Utah 64, Detroit 55
The Titans fell to Pac-12 foe Utah, 64-55, in their first game of the Texas-San Antonio Thanksgiving Classic. Freshman Shareta Brown had 14 points and six rebounds. The freshman was 10-of-11 at the free throw line. Junior Chanahl Putnam was the only other Titan in double-figures with 10 points.
Detroit led 28-27 at halftime and still led by one with 15 minutes remaining, but Utah outscored the Titans 21-7 in the next 10 minutes to take a 53-40 lead with five minutes left in the game and Detroit was never able to get closer than seven points the rest of the way.
The Titans finish up their trip to San Antonio tomorrow when they face host UTSA at 6 p.m. ET.
Akron 97, Loyola 86
The Ramblers led 47-42 at halftime, but the Zips outscored Loyola 55-39 in the second half to win going away, 97-86.
Loyola came into the game allowing a conference-best 45.8 points per game while only allowing opponents to shoot 28.3 percent from the field, also a conference best, but Akron solved Loyola’s defensive pressure scoring 97 points and shooting 52 percent from the field for the game.
Loyola was led by Patrice King who scored 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Lisa Samplawski scored 19 points, including knocking down five three-point field goals.
Colorado 60, Valparaiso 32
The Crusaders could never get on track offensively, falling to host Colorado 60-32 in the first round of the Omni Hotels Classic in Boulder, Co.
Valparaiso only shot 25.5 percent from the field and turned it over 21 times in the loss to the Buffaloes.
Valpo was only down 7-5 eight minutes into the game, but Colorado ended the half on a 28-8 run and was never threatened in the second half.
Ashley Varner had a team-high 10 points and seven rebounds for the Crusaders.
