Men's HL Championship Round 2 Scores Team Individuals
The Butler women’s golf team continues to lead, while the Loyola men’s golf team moved up four positions to grab the lead after two rounds of the 2012 Horizon League Golf Championships on the El Campeon Golf Course at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Loyola leapt from fifth place to the lead on Saturday as the Ramblers combined as a team to shot a sizzling three-over-par 291 on the day to overcome a 13-shot deficit to first round leader Green Bay. The team round of 291 is the lowest score in this year’s tournament and the lowest round by a Horizon League team since the season-ending Championships were moved to Mission Inn Resort prior to last year’s tournament.
The Ramblers were led by Sean Hickey and Erik Hoops in the second round as both shot one-under-par 71s. Overall, Nick Willenborg is leading Loyola with a two-round total of 150 (75-75) to place in a tie-for-second place in the individual standings. Nick Dennis is one shot behind Willenborg (77-74—151) and in a tie-for-seventh place. Alex Cusumano rounds out the Rambler lineup with a two-day total of 154 (78-76) and is in a tie-for-15th place.
First round leader Green Bay is just two strokes behind Loyola as the Phoenix have been paced by Cam Fuller (74-76—150) and Chad Ebert (74-76—150) who are both tied for second place.
Detroit is three strokes behind the Phoenix in third place. Lucas Kim of the Titans is the individual leader after shooting a one-over-par 73 in the second round. He has a two-round score of 147 (74-73) and has a three-stroke lead over the five players tied for second place.
Cleveland State is right on Detroit’s heels, one stroke behind the Titans for fourth place. Valparaiso is in fifth, three strokes behind the Vikings. Butler, Wright State and Youngstown State round out the men’s race.
Butler extended its 11-stroke lead after the first round to 20 strokes heading into Sunday’s final round. The Bulldogs shot a 323 on the day, eight strokes lower than their opening round score. Michele Nash and Jenna Peters both shot 80 on Saturday to lead the Bulldogs, while Clare Cornelius continues to have the low score for the team through two rounds with a 160 (79-81). Butler has three players in the individual top-10 with Cornelius (3rd), Isabella Lambert (tied for fourth) and Nash (sixth) all in contention for an individual title.
Detroit remained in second place after two rounds. The Titans shot 10 strokes better on Saturday than they did on Friday as Lindsey Lammers and Olivia Richards both shot a team-low five-over-par 78. Lammers leads the women’s tournament with a two-day score of 157 (79-78).
Loyola and Cleveland State are in a tie for third-place six strokes behind Detroit. Loyola’s Ann Vrdolyak had the lowest women’s score of the day, a four-over-par 77, to move into second place in the individual standings, one shot behind Lammers.
Youngstown State, Green Bay, Valparaiso and UIC are fifth through eighth.
Both the men and women tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday for the third and final round. The women start on hole one, while the men will begin on hole 10.
