Butler recorded the lone win in the Horizon League on Monday night, while Green Bay, Detroit and Wright State took losses on the road.
Butler 57, Savannah State 42
Butler locked down on the defensive end of the court, holding visiting Savannah State to one field goal in the first 14:41 of the second half en route to a 57-42 victory in the team's second game of the Hoosier Invitational.
Butler (2-2) was slow out of the gate, trailing 20-17 at the half before stymieing Savannah State over the final 20 minutes. The Tigers shot just 7-of-21 from the field, not hitting their first field goal from inside the three-point arc with 5:19 left in the game. The Bulldogs forced 13 turnovers in the half and 23 in the game, converting the miscues into 18 points.
Ronald Nored led the defensive effort with four steals, filling the box score with seven points, four rebounds and five assists. Andrew Smith led four Bulldogs in double figures with 11 points; Chase Stigall, Jackson Aldridge and Roosevelt Jones each had 10, with Jones tying Butler for the team lead with six rebounds.
#10/9 Florida 78, Wright State 65
Wright State's offense came alive, but the Raiders could not stop a balanced Florida attack, falling 78-65 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla.
Julius Mays led Wright State (2-2) with 21 points, bringing the Raiders within nine points at 66-57 with five minutes to play, but could draw no further. Mays was 8-of-11 from the floor, knocking down 3-of-5 attempts from three-point range. John Balwaigaire came off the bench to post 15 points, while Reggie Arceneaux had 13.
Entering the evening averaging 59.3 points per game and shooting 36.2 percent from the floor, Wright State put forth its best offensive effort of the year, going 23-of-52 from the field. Florida was led by the duo of Kenny Boynton and Brad Beal, who each finished with 22 points.
Indiana State 57, Green Bay 56
Leading with two minutes to go, Green Bay saw Indiana State hit a three-pointer with 15 seconds left to snatch a 57-56 win from the Phoenix in Terre Haute.
The Phoenix took a 56-52 lead on Terry Johnson's layup with 1:58 showing on the clock. However, Green Bay (2-3) would not score the rest of the game, missing out on an opportunity to build on a late two-point lead. After a defensive stop with 22 seconds left, Brennan Cougill went to the free throw line, but missed the front end of the 1-and-1, giving Indiana State a chance at the game-winner.
Steve Baker helped Green Bay build the late lead, knocking down consecutive three pointers in the second half to lead the Phoenix with 15 points. Johnson finished with 12 points, while Cougill had 10.
George Washington 86, Detroit 73
George Washington took advantage of Detroit's up-tempo pace, racing out to a 45-28 halftime lead and holding on for an 86-73 win at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Detroit (2-2) fell to 0-2 in the Progressive CBE Classic and will play games on Tuesday and Wednesday versus Bowling Green and Austin Peay, respectively.
Down 26 points in the second half, the Titans refused to go away, frustrating George Washington with a 13-0 run to climb back in the game with seven minutes to play. Continued defensive pressure resulted in two Chase Simon free throws, closing the gap to 77-68 with 3:30 on the clock. Another turnover resulted in a Ray McCallum three-point play, making it a 77-71 game, but George Washington would stop the slide with a basket as the shot clock expired, doing just enough to hold on for the win.
Nick Minnerath led the Titans with 18 points, while LaMarcus Lowe recorded nine points, 10 boards and five blocks. Simon added 14 points while McCallum and Doug Anderson each finished with 11.
