PENDLETON, Ind. - Lauren McNulty went 3-for-4 with three runs-batted-in to lead Butler University to an 8-1 victory over Youngstown State University Thursday in the second game of the Horizon League Softball Championship at Legends Field.

The fifth-seeded Bulldogs (24-26) broke open the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, while Brenna Fisher (12-14) scattered seven hits and struck out five in a complete-game victory.

Leading 2-1, Butler exploded in the fifth as Paige Ashton's two-run home run put the Bulldogs up 4-1. After a Youngstown State error allowed another run to score, Bridget Paine scored when Erin Falkenberry reached on another error, and McNulty drove in Falkenberry with a single. Jen Arriaga then scored on a throwing error on the catcher when McNulty stole second.

Youngstown State (8-41), the eighth seed, started the game with three straight hits and scored its only run on Kristina Rendle's solo home run after leadoff-hitter Haley Thomas was thrown out stealing. Butler turned a double play to end the inning, and the Penguins got only two runners as far as second base the rest of the game.

Butler advances to play second-seeded Cleveland State University this afternoon at 6 p.m. ET.

Youngstown State will meet sixth-seeded Valparaiso University Friday in the consolation bracket at 9 a.m. ET.
