INDIANAPOLIS – Butler senior Kris Gauson (Edinburgh, Scotland) has been named the Horizon League Men’s Runner of the Week, while Milwaukee junior Jake Whitewater (La Crosse, Wis.) has earned Horizon League Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors, for the week beginning Jan. 17.
Competing in the 800 meters for the first time in the indoor season, Gauson ran the top time in the Horizon League this season, clipping the line in 1:52.56, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of the nearest competitor at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., hosted by Indiana University.
The senior now owns top times in the Horizon League in both the 800 and 3,000 meters with a month remaining until the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Whitewater helped lead Milwaukee to a 79.5-58.5 dual win over city rival Marquette on Jan. 22, capturing titles in both the long jump and triple jump. The victories were two of the nine the Panthers racked up in the meet.
In the long jump, Whitewater cleared 23’1/2”, the second-best jump in the Horizon League this season. Whitewater’s leap of 47’1/4” in the triple jump also ranks second in the League through the first two months of the indoor campaign.
Whitewater capped his day with a podium finish in the 60 meter dash, crossing the line in 7.18 to place third behind a pair of teammates.
Butler will compete in the Indiana Relays on Jan. 28-29, in Bloomington, Ind., while Milwaukee will head to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin Elite Invitational over the same days.
