HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- After 18 holes of the of the 2011 Horizon League Men's Golf Championship, Cleveland State leads the conference contingent with a four-stroke lead over Green Bay.
The Vikings posted a first-round score of 308 while the Phoenix carded a 312. Valparaiso and Wright State are tied for third just one stroke behind second-place with a 313, while Detroit, the 2010 Champion sits fifth at 314.
Leading the individual championship is Cleveland State’s Andrew Bailey as the freshman turned in a one-under par 71. Loyola’s Dylan Gergen shot a 74, good for second place, while Green Bay’s Chad Ebert, Cleveland State’s Michael Klaric III, and Wright State’s Charlie Doll all tied for third, carding a 75.
On the women’s side, the 2010 champion Titans lead after 18 holes with a three-stroke lead over Loyola. Detroit shot a first-round 326, while the Ramblers turned in a 329. Butler came in third place after shooting a 41, while Cleveland State finished fourth with a 46.
Youngstown State junior Samantha Formeck led all individuals after 18 holes with a one-over par 74, while Detroit senior Alainna Stefan, the 2010 Individual medalist, sits one stroke behind with a 75. Loyola’s April Ohlendorf sits third after carding a 77.
The second round of the 2011 Horizon League Golf Championships starts tomorrow with the women teeing off at 7:30am ET, followed by the men at 9:30am. The championship will conclude on Sunday as both teams tee off of split tees at 7:30am.
