HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The second day of the 2014 Horizon League Golf Championships saw Cleveland State and Oakland extend their day one leads.
Cleveland State turned in rounds of 70, 73, 73, 77 for a 293 to post a 36-hole total 593. The Vikings hold a six-shot lead over Detroit and a 12-shot lead over Youngstown State. Defending champion Valparaiso sits in fourth-place at 609.
Andrew Bailey of Cleveland State holds the 36-hole lead at 142 (72-70). He opened his round 1-under par thru six holes before making a double bogey on seven. He bounced back with an eagle on hole 10 and a birdie on 17 to finish the round at two-under par. Bailey, who is in search of his first outright Horizon League Golf Championships victory, holds a two-shot lead heading into the final round.
Detroit’s Spencer Lendzion, who was tied for the overnight lead with Cleveland State’s Michael Balcar, opened his round with a birdie on hole one and a chip in birdie on two. The right-handed golfer played the next seven holes in five-over par before making birdies on 13 and 14 to close with a 74.
Balcar carded three birdies and six pars on the back nine to post a one-over par 73. He sits in second-place while Lendzion is in third, three shots back of the pace set by Bailey.
Kyle Gaines of Detroit was largest mover of day after he posted a one-under par 71 to move from a tie for 24th place to a tie for ninth.
On the women’s side, Oakland extended its lead to eight shots. Detroit, last year’s champion, sits in second-place at 632, Valparaiso is in third at 638 while Youngstown State is fourth at 641.
Emily Dixon shot a second round 80 for a 36-hole total 153. She is in a tie for first-place with two-time Player of the Year Lindsey Lammers of Detroit, who shot a four-over par 77 today.
Avery Steen of Green Bay, who shot an 84 in the opening round, bounced back to post a two-over par 75. The round stands as the low score of the second round. The freshman birdied three of her last five rounds to move into a tie for 13th place.
Kassandra Komma, who had the lead for much of the front nine today, shot an 81 and sits at 156, three shots off the lead.
The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. ET with live scoring for the men and women on Golfstat.
