HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The first day of the 2014 Horizon League Golf Championships saw Cleveland State and Oakland grab early leads.

On the men’s side, Cleveland State opened with a 300, followed by Detroit (303) and Youngstown State (305). Valparaiso started its title defense with an opening round 309.

Spencer Lendzion of Detroit opened with a 1-under par 71 to tie for the early lead. Lendzion opened with a 33 before bogeying two of his last four holes to come home with a 38. Michael Balcar of Cleveland State joined Lendzion with a 71. Balcar opened with an eagle on hole #1 and closed with a 35 on his outgoing nine.

Andrew Bailey, the three-time Horizon League Player of the Year on the men’s side, opened with a level-par 72. Bailey closed with birdies on 13, 14 and 18 to post a 3-under par 34 back nine. Thomas Wettstein of Valparaiso, the defending champion, shot a 74 to sit in a tie for fourth.

Detroit, last year’s women’s champion, opened with a 317 and sits seven shots behind the first-round leader, Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies have three golfers tied for sixth or better. Leading the contingent is Kassandra Komma, who shot a 2-over par 75. Komma is two shots behind Emily Dixon of Youngstown State.

Youngstown State is two shots off first-place at 312. Dixon and Aislynn Merling sit first and second as Merling shot 74.

Allison Mitzel of Youngstown State, who won last year’s championship, opened with an 80. Mitzel won the 2013 championship by seven shots (77-71-73-221).

Cleveland State’s Shelly Ford started 1-under par through 15 and posted a 76. Ford is in a tie for fourth with Detroit's Lindsey Lammers. Besides a triple bogey on 12, Lammers played the course in even-par.

Round two begins at 7:30 a.m. ET with live scoring for the men and women on Golfstat.
