Strong Second Half Leads CSU To Horizon League Victory Over Valpo-- Box Score
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's basketball team used a second half surge to propel the Vikings to a 69-62 victory over Valparaiso Thursday evening, opening Horizon League play with a 1-0 record. The win also improves CSU to 9-5 overall this season, including a 7-1 mark at home.

Imani Gordon and Cori Coleman led the Cleveland State offense with 19 points each, while Coleman also grabbed seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Kiersten Green also tallied double-digits or the Vikings, notching 14 points, including two three-pointers – her ninth game with multiple three-pointers this season.

Alexis Eckles added eight points and a team-high nine points, while she tied her career-high with five blocks – the third time that she has notched five blocks this season. Read more

Vikings Launch Second Half Comeback to Overcome Crusaders-- Box Score
Freshman Jasmyn Walker (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) collected her first double-double Thursday, but Valparaiso fell to Cleveland State 69-62 at the Wolstein Center.

Walker continued her elevated play as the Brown and Gold cut the ribbon on the league schedule. The forward was 5-for-6 from the field in the opening period - including a three - to pace all scorers with 11 at the break. Valpo held a 36-31 advantage over the Vikings at the half. The Crusaders made it to the foul line just once in the first twenty minutes, but were 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Lexi Miller (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) came on strong for the Crusaders in the closing minutes. The junior was responsible for Valpo's final eight points of the first half, a stanza that saw the Brown and Gold ahead for 18:32. Miller ended the night with 12 points. Read more

YSU Starts League Play With 69-66 Win at UIC-- Box Score
Chicago – The Youngstown State women's basketball team had four players score in double figures and held off UIC late for a 69-66 victory at the UIC Pavilion on Thursday in the Horizon League opener for both schools.

The Penguins scored the final seven points of the first half to tie the score at halftime, and they withstood a late Flames run in the second half to start conference play with a victory for the third time in the last four years. Freshman Indiya Benjamin had 12 of her 17 points in the second half, and fellow freshman Nikki Arbanas had 13 of her 15 in the final 20 minutes. Heidi Schlegel added 14 points, and Latisha Walker finished with 11 points.

YSU shot 58.8 percent from the field and was 16-of-18 from the free-throw line in the second half. The Penguins, who entered the contest leading the country in free-throw percentage, finished the game going 25-of-29 from the charity stripe. Read more

UIC Falls to Youngstown State, 69-66-- Box Score
CHICAGO - The UIC women's basketball team (10-4, 0-1 HL) opened Horizon League play Thursday with a 69-66 home loss to Youngstown State (12-2, 1-0 HL). YSU made 25-of-29 free throw attempts and shot 8-of-19 from three-point range.

The Penguins became just the fourth UIC opponent to shoot over 40 percent from the field (.474) and converted 58 percent of their field goals in the second half (10-of-17). YSU secured the victory by making 16-of-18 free throws in the second half.

UIC picked up 11 steals and forced 19 YSU turnovers. The Flames also outrebounded the Penguins, 38-29, and scored 14 more points in the paint (28-14). Read more
