WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Cleveland State and UIC rolled to the semifinals of the Horizon League Women’s Tennis Championship on Friday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
The seeds held as the Vikings jumped out to an early lead via the doubles point, while UIC collected four straight-set singles wins to return to the semifinals.
Ellen Folkers and Victoria Bensimon combined to put Cleveland State on the board first with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, followed shortly by a 6-3 victory from Mathilde Orange and Princess Gbadamosi to secure the doubles point.
Up early, the lead quickly doubled behind Gbadamosi’s 6-0, 6-1 sweep at No. 5 singles. Orange followed with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph to put the Vikings within a point of the match.
Elizabeth Guy put Oakland on the board, claiming a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4.
Cleveland State clinched the match with Jana Schober’s 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 6.
UIC fell behind early to Milwaukee before capturing the day’s first four singles matches.
After the teams’ No. 1 and 2 teams split results, Milwaukee’s Dana Shannon and Mardee Merar won a tie-break, 7-2, to capture the match at No. 3, 7-6, and give the Panthers the early point.
However, Keti Mebuke set the tone for UIC’s efforts in singles, rolling to a 6-4, 6-0 win to knot the match at a point apiece. Melika LeBlanc followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory that put the Flames in front for good.
Ann-Sophie Hahn’s 6-4, 6-2 win put UIC within a point of clinching, and Oana Manole provided the winning match at No. 3, persevering to a 7-5, 6-4 triumph.
UIC will meet No. 1 seed Youngstown State at 4 pm ET tomorrow, while Cleveland State will take on No. 2 Detroit at 7 pm ET. Both matches will be carried on ESPN3.
