INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso sophomore Jeffrey Schorsch and Youngstown State senior Marta Burak were named the Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Year, in voting of the League’s coaches.
Both players were unbeaten in Horizon League play. The reigning Freshman of the Year, Schorsch turned in a 6-0 League mark en route to a 19-4 spring record. Burak, a first team all-league pick last year, was 8-0 in conference play and 17-2 overall.
Youngstown State’s Remi Chancerel and Silviu Mistreanu collected the Men’s Freshman of the Year and Herb Foster Sportsmanship honors, respectively. For the fourth time in five seasons and second straight year, Green Bay head coach Mark Thomas was voted Men’s Coach of the Year.
On the women’s side, Detroit’s Sasha Nionova was tabbed the Freshman of the Year, while Green Bay senior Stephanie Londre was voted the Herb Foster Sportsmanship award. In just his second year at the helm of the YSU program, Mickael Sopel was named the Women’s Coach of the Year.
In his second collegiate season, Schorsch anchored one of the top two spots in the Valpo lineup all season, finishing an unblemished 5-0 at No. 1 singles and 14-4 at No. 2. In doubles play, Schorsch teamed with Charlie Emhardt to go 17-3 at No. 1.
Going 17-2 overall and 8-0 in conference play, Burak finished her regular season career on a 25-match winning streak in Horizon League action. For her career, Burak dropped just one regular season match at No. 1.
Joining Schorsch on the first was Green Bay’s Michael Tenzer. The two-time League Player of the Year rounded out his career with his fourth straight selection to the first team. Dave Bacalla made it two Crusaders on the first team, while Wright State’s Lauri Makikalli and Leopold Gomez Islinger of Green Bay were both voted onto the first team for the second straight year. Chancerel completed the six-man squad.
Burak was joined by teammate Dominika Lackova, with the UIC duo of Keti Mebuke and Jacki Altansarnai earning first team honors. Cleveland State’s Ellen Folkers and Nionova rounded out the team.
The 2015 Horizon League Tennis Championships are being contested April 24-26 at the Schwartz Tennis Center on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. All three days will be carried live on ESPN3.
