INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State senior forward Jamie Avona (Boardman, Ohio) is the Horizon League Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Milwaukee junior defender Hannah Kaul (Fredonia, Wis.) has earned Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 1-7. The award is the second of the season for Avona and the first of Kaul’s career.

Cleveland State (5-8-0, 1-2-0 Horizon) collected its first conference win of the year on Monday, using a golden goal to beat Green Bay, 1-0, in double overtime before cruising past Francis Marion, 4-1, to close the week. Milwaukee (3-7-1, 2-2-0 Horizon) picked up an important League victory, 1-0, at Valparaiso.

Avona notched the game-winning goals in both of the Vikings’ wins, heading in a corner kick two minutes into double overtime to send CSU to the League victory over the Phoenix. On senior day at Krenzler Field, Avona had Cleveland State’s second goal of the match, moving into a tie for the team lead with her fifth goal of the year.

Kaul anchored Milwaukee’s back line against a stiff Valparaiso attack, helping the Panthers record their fourth shutout of the year. Kaul played all 90 minutes in the match, helping limit the Crusaders to just eight shots, one of which was on goal.
