The Detroit women’s golf team and the Valparaiso men’s golf team are in the lead after two rounds of play at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

The Titans have a nine-stroke lead over second-place Youngstown State after both squads fired identical 303 scores on Saturday. Cleveland State, who was tied with UDM after the first round, is in third place, seven shots behind the Penguins.

Valparaiso is in fourth place, two shots behind Cleveland State, Loyola is fifth, Green Bay is sixth and UIC sits in seventh place.

On the men’s side, Valparaiso went from third place after the first day to the lead at the end of the second day after the team combined to shoot a one-over-par, 289 in the second round. Austin Gaugert and Kyle Henning both went one-under-par 71 in the round and Thomas Wettstein shot an even-par 72 for the second consecutive day to lead the Crusaders.

Valparaiso’s lead is just two strokes though as Cleveland State stayed close with a second round team score of 292. Michael Balcar led the Vikings effort with a one-under-par 71, while Andrew Bailey shot an even-par 70 to remain the individual leader in the tournament with a two-day score of 142.

Loyola, which had the lead after the first round, shot 305 on Saturday and now stands in third place in the men’s race, 14 shots behind Valparaiso. Green Bay is two behind Loyola in fourth, while Detroit is next in fifth, four shots behind the Phoenix. Youngstown State (621) and Wright State (627) round out the men’s field.

Bailey remains in front of the men’s field with a two-under-par 142. Wettstein is in second, two shots behind Bailey, while Balcar and Gaugert are tied for third, four shots behind Bailey.

Youngstown State’s Allison Mitzel rose from fourth place to first on Saturday as the Penguin golfer shot a one-under-par 71 to take the lead of the women’s race with one round to go. She has a one-stroke lead over Valparaiso’s Kelly Voigt and a two-stroke lead over Loyola’s April Ohlendorf.

Ohlendorf shot a two-under-par 70 on Saturday to set a Horizon League Women’s Championship Record for lowest round.
