Detroit, Wright State Cruise to Wins on Monday

INDIANAPOLIS – Both Detroit and Wright State cruised to victories on Monday night, helping boost the Horizon League’s overall record to start the 2012 women’s soccer season to a robust 9-3-1 through four days of matches.

Kaitlyn Quarrell’s hat trick broke open a scoreless game and sent Detroit to its first win of the year, 4-0, over visiting Canisius at Titan Field.

Quarrell’s goals came in a 10:57 span in the second half and vaulted her to the top of the League scoring ladder. She netted her first at 56:04 taking a long cross from Mary Leone on the right side of the field. Quarrell was on the left side of the six-yard box and tapped it in. Her second came as she found a loose ball just inside the 18-yard frame and fired it into the upper right corner of the net for goal number two.

Her final tally came at the 67:01 mark as newcomer Haley Burtraw cut towards the net on the left goal line and made a great pass to Quarrell in front of the net who made no mistake.

Janae Paveglio would close the scoring in the 83^rd minute, heading in a cross from Jennifer Borawski.

Nora Abolins made three saves in goal for the Titans capturing her first shutout of the season.

With the 4-0 win over Canisius, head coach Mike Lupenec now has 175 career victories as a head coach, all with the Titans.

Wright State dominated play throughout Monday, breezing past visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene, 3-0.

After waiting nearly 87 minutes for her first goal of the year on Friday, Emilie Fillion opened the scoring for the Raiders as she gathered in a rebound in the middle of the box and connected on her second goal of the season at the 22:54 mark of the first half.

Emily Reddington then made it 2-0 with her first goal of the year at the 42:19 mark of the opening period, with sophomore Michelle Rick posting her first assist.

Freshman Ini Umotong then rounded out the scoring with her first collegiate goal at the 63:48 mark of the second half, with Fillion tallying her first assist of the season.

Defensively, goalkeepers Brooke McCurdy, Kelsey Deal and Alex Hoferkamp combined to post the shutout as WSU allowed the Cougars to attempt just two shots on the night.

The Raider offense, meanwhile, took 28 shots for the match.
