INDIANAPOLIS – Wright State and Valparaiso each started the women’s soccer season with victories on Friday night, while Milwaukee battled No. 24 South Carolina to a scoreless draw to open the year. Detroit, Cleveland State and Green Bay were hard-luck losers on Friday.

Wright State 1, Ohio 0
A goal in the 87th minute pushed Wright State past Ohio, 1-0, in a highly entertaining game at the Rinzler Student Sports Complex.

Controlling the run of play, Wright State continually knocked on the door before Emilie Fillion put the Raiders on the board. Natalie Sedlock and Kalee Thompson set up the play for Fillion, who notched her first goal of the year and fourth of her career.

While Wright State (1-0-0) and Ohio went up-and-down the field with a series of run outs and counter-attacks, Brooke McCurdy picked up the shutout in goal, stopping three shots, including two immediately preceding Fillion’s tally.

Valparaiso 1, IUPUI 0
Valparaiso entered the year knowing that Louisa Desario was capable of playing a lead role for its offense, and the forward did just that on Friday, picking up the game’s lone goal to push Valparaiso past IUPUI, 1-0, at Brown Field.

Taking 26 shots, Valparaiso (1-0-0) put 10 on frame, with Desario’s goal coming in the 58th minute. Catherine Terrell found Desario, putting her in position to go 1-on-1 with the IUPUI keeper. Desario beat her from 10 yards out, and the Valpo defense took care of the rest.

Kristen Manski was hardly troubled in 90 minutes of work, stopping just two shots on goal. On the night, IUPUI had just five shots overall.

No. ARV Milwaukee 0, No. 24 South Carolina 0
In a battle between teams both earning places in the NSCAA national poll, Milwaukee and No. 24 South Carolina played to a scoreless draw at Engelmann Stadium in the opener of the Milwaukee Cup.

Milwaukee (0-0-1) entered the night receiving votes in the NSCAA poll and backed up the faith shown in them, as Jamie Forbes stopped all eight South Carolina shots on goal. With 17 shots, the No. 24 Gamecocks put more pressure on a young Panther defense, but the veteran Forbes had the Panthers well-positioned throughout the night.

Forbes would make two saves in the second overtime period to thwart South Carolina’s attempts at a win, while Milwaukee could not come away with the game-winning goal in the closing seconds off a corner kick.

Kelly Lewers led the Panthers with two shots on goal and four overall.

Central Michigan 1, Detroit 0
A late goal from Central Michigan in the 88th minute 87:46 mark carried the Chippewas to a 1-0 win over Detroit at Titan Field on Friday afternoon.

The second half saw the Chippewas take some offensive opportunities but Detroit’s (0-1-0) new-look defensive backfield stood its ground along with goalkeeper Nota Abolins. Abolins finished with eight saves on the day.

Kaely Schlosser scored in the 88th minute from just inside the 18-yard box netting the lone goal of the game. One final opportunity came for Detroit as Nina Carter broke in on net in the final seconds of the game but her shot went wide, ending Detroit's chance at a tie.

Kent State 2, Cleveland State 0
Cleveland State could never get its offense on track in a 2-0 loss to visiting Kent State.

An own goal in the 20th minute saw Cleveland State (0-1-0) get behind early, as a Viking defender headed in an attempted centering pass. A stout Kent State defense kept the Vikings without a shot on goal in the match.

Jessacca Gironda would give the Flashes an insurance goal in the 51st minute, beating Sarah Wood to the far corner with a header. Wood had two saves in the match.

South Dakota State 2, Green Bay 0
A goal in the 83rd minute sent South Dakota State past Green Bay, 2-0, at Aldo Santaga Stadium in the Phoenix’s season-opener.

Off a Megan Kingston corner, Darci Miller was able to head the ball past Green Bay (0-1-0) keeper Katy Pilarzyk. The Phoenix were not able to come up with the equalizer in the final seven minutes of regulation.

With Green Bay pressing forward to try and find the match-tying goal, South Dakota State secured the match-clinching goal in the 86th minute, as Diana Potterveld capped a 2-on-1 by finding the back of the net.

Despite narrowly South Dakota State for most of the night, the Phoenix could not beat Jackrabbits keeper Elisa Stamatakis, who recorded four saves. Green Bay finished the match with eight shots overall to SDSU’s seven.
