INDIANAPOLIS - Detroit sophomore guard Chase Simon has been named the Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 31. The weekly honor is Simon's second in the last three weeks.
A native of Detroit, Simon averaged 25 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists as the Titans defeated Loyola (83-63) and UIC (76-73) to move into a tie for second place in the League standings with Wright State. He shot 50 percent (17-of-34) from the field and was 11-for-12 at the free-throw line for the week. He posted his second 30-point game of the season with 30 against Loyola on Thursday and then tallied his second double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds versus UIC on Saturday.
For the season, Simon averages 14.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game at Detroit. He ranks second in League-games only with 17.2 points per contest. In the Titans' last six games, Simon has averaged 24.2 points per game while shooting 50 percent from field and 84 percent from the line.
Detroit (14-8, 7-4 Horizon League) will play at #23/15 Butler (18-4, 11-0) Thursday with a chance to close the gap on the League-leading Bulldogs. The Titans' 14 victories this season already are as many as they had the last two years combined.
