Cleveland State 2, Green Bay 0
Allie Sieradzki scored an early goal and Vickie Havas tallied a late goal to lead the Cleveland State women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Green Bay in Horizon League action on Saturday afternoon at Krenzler Field.

The Vikings improved to 7-6-2 overall and 2-2-1 in league play, while the Phoenix slipped to 8-4-2 overall and 2-2 in the Horizon League.

CSU, which has played overtime contests in each of their first four league matches this year, posted its sixth shutout of the season, the second most in a season in program history. The 2010 squad had seven shutouts.

Sieradzki put the Vikings on the board just 8:29 into today's contest when she headed in a corner kick from Katie Bainbridge.

It stayed that way until Havas netted her fourth goal of the season, and 15th of her career, with just over two minutes to play, sealing the win.

Havas took a throw in just outside the box from Kelcey Fischer, spun with the ball, took a dribble and unloaded a shot from 18 yards out to the far post.

It was redemption for Havas, who earlier in the half had a shot from the left wing miss to the far post by mere inches.

Sarah Wood made three saves for the Vikings to earn the shutout as CSU's backline of Fischer, Sabrina Abram, Marissa Sarsfield and Erin O'Toole all once again played the entire match, helping the squad to another shutout win.

The Vikings finished with a 9-7 advantage in shots on a windy afternoon, while each team took three corner kicks.

Oakland 1, UIC 0
Alice Palmer's third goal of the season coupled with Alison Holland's second career shutout helped Oakland (4-9-1, 2-2) to a 1-0 win over visiting UIC (2-12-0, 0-4) Saturday night on Women In Sport Day at the Oakland Soccer Field. Palmer accounted for six of the Golden Grizzles' 16 shots while Holland made three saves to anchor a solid defensive effort from the back line.

"From start to finish, we played very well and dominated in terms of possession and creating chances" said head coach Margaret Saurin. "I am very happy with scoring the goal to win the game and very happy with our shutout tonight behind a good team defensive effort. Alice Palmer did a good job and played well all 90 minutes as our target striker and scored a cracking goal off a great volley. She also dug in and did the defensive work, dropped into the midfield and did what she had to do to help the team. She does a great job of holding the ball up and has great vision so we tried to get her the ball as much as we could tonight."

Palmer's game-winner came just 12 minutes into the game. Kyla Kellermann corralled a cross inside the middle of the penalty box that went to a UIC defender who tapped the ball back just outside the 18 yard line inside the half circle. Palmer moved to her left and fired a volley out of mid air from 20 yards out past UIC goaltender Kelly Fritz to the right side.

Valparaiso 1, Youngstown State 0 (OT)
This time, it wasn’t one of the usual suspects for the Valparaiso women’s soccer team finding the back of the net.  This time, it was freshman defender Grace Rogers (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) who made her first career goal count, winning the ball in the box off a scramble in the 100th minute and tucking it away for the golden goal in Valparaiso’s 1-0 win over Youngstown State Saturday night at Brown Field.

The win moves the Crusaders to a perfect 4-0-0 in Horizon League action, as Valpo is now three points clear of the rest of the pack at the halfway mark of the league slate.  The program record unbeaten streak was extended to 12 straight matches Saturday evening, the last six of those being Crusader victories.

“I thought tonight, we did a nice job in our clearances,” said Crusader head coach John Marovich.  “Youngstown State put a lot of balls into the box in the air, and I thought we dealt with that well.  The other thing I thought was when they put us under stress tonight, we were really composed – our players handled the pressure with an unbelievable amount of composure, which allowed us to get out and get things done.”

After the match made it through full time scoreless and with the second extra time period looming, the Crusaders were able to find the winner.  Erika Schoemann (Calgary, Alberta/Saint Mary’s) sent a free kick from the right side towards the near post around the edge of the six-yard box.  On the ensuing scramble, the ball popped straight into the air, where Rogers out-leapt her defender and got just enough of a header on it to send it into the back of the net for the match-winning tally.

“I felt like our change in the second half to move Kristen Warner up top helped us get out and settle into the game a bit more,” said Marovich.  “She did a great job helping hold up play and getting us through most of the second half while playing in that position.  We know that in league games especially, we have to continue to stay with our process and what we do well, and at the end of the day, a freshman steps up and gets her first career goal – no better situation than to win in overtime.”

Saturday night was a match that Valpo controlled the better part of, out-shooting Youngstown State 13-5 on the night and putting nine shots on goal.  But many of the Crusaders’ efforts came from distance, as their efforts from inside the box were thwarted by the Penguin defense.  Valpo also earned nine corner kicks over the duration of the match, but were unable to convert on any.

Meanwhile, the Valparaiso defense was as stout as ever in surrendering just five shot attempts to Youngstown State (6-6-2, 2-2-1 Horizon).  While Sydney Galvez-Daley (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick [Creighton]) only needed to make one save to earn the clean sheet, her eighth of the season to tie her for third on the Crusader single-season chart, the sophomore came off her line well on a number of other occasions to thwart potential chances.  The back line also was key, blocking a couple of Penguin efforts inside the penalty area.

Wright State 1, Milwaukee 0
The Wright State women's soccer team was outshot 17-2 for the match, but made the most of its limited opportunities as a Natalie Sedlock goal gave the Raiders a 1-0 victory at Milwaukee Saturday, the 100th for head coach Pat Ferguson at WSU.

The Raiders attempted just one shot in the first half, but that turned out to be the only shot WSU would need on the day as junior forward Natalie Sedlock scored her team-best third goal of the season on a redirected header in the box.  Sophomore forward Paige Aguilera and senior defender Allie Metzler were each credited with an assist on the play, the second of the year for both.

Milwaukee led 7-1 in shots in the first half and 10-1 in the second, but the WSU defense preserved the shutout as junior goalkeeper Halle Pyle posted her third complete shutout of the season and the fourth for the Raiders overall, recording four saves in the process.

The win was the 100th at Wright State for 10th-year head coach Pat Ferguson, who has a mark of 100-65-26 at the helm of the Raiders and has a career record of 176-127-37 over 18 years with stops at Malone, Mount Union and Campbell before coming to WSU.
