Detroit 2, IPFW 0
The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team scored three minutes into the game Friday and never looked back, earning a 2-0 road victory over IPFW at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The Titans improved to 1-1-0 with the triumph.

Detroit scored just 3:31 into the contest as sophomore Anna Mindling took a pass from senior Alyssa Lotito and sent the ball past the keeper into the right corner of the goal. Mindling's first goal of the season gave Detroit a 1-0 lead early.

The score stayed 1-0 until after halftime when the Titans found the back of the net again. Sophomore forward Aubrey Formica rocketed a shot past IPFW's keeper for her second career goal and first of the season. Classmate Carley Rice assisted on the goal to give UDM a 2-0 lead in the 71st minute.

"Aubrey Formica scoing the goal off the bench and giving us some energy was huge," Detroit head coach Mike Lupenec said. "Give kudos to Anna Mindling. She scored the first goal and she controlled the game up top and was able to get the midfielders involved. She played the entire game and was a force. I don't think we would have won without her."

Freshman goalkeeper Marina Manzo, making her first career start, came up with a strong save late in the game to preserve the shutout. Manzo played the entire game and finished with four saves.

"It was a hard fought battle," Lupenec said. "Give credit to the back line and the freshman goalie. She had a big save late in the game. She did what she had to do. It could have been a big momentum switch. The back line was excellent."

UDM finished with 13 shots compared to IPFW's 11. Detroit also edged the Mastodons in corner kicks, 5-2, while taking less fouls (five) to IPFW's 14.

Green Bay 3, Northern Iowa 1
A pair of goals from senior Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) lifted the Green Bay women’s soccer team to a 3-1 victory on Friday afternoon at Santaga Stadium. The Phoenix improves to 2-1-0 on the young season, while Northern Iowa falls to 1-2-0.

Kernen made an immediate impact in her first game starting this season, scoring the game’s first goal at the 24:29 mark of the first half. Kernen received a pass in the box off the body of Brianna Messner (Seymour, Wis.), who deflected it out down to the senior. Kernen powered it past the UNI keeper, despite her getting a glove on the shot.

After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Phoenix struck again just 8:32 into the second half at 53:32 when Kernen found the back of the net for the second time in the game. It was the pass from freshman Alex Zeller (Dundee, Ill.) that led to the second score of the afternoon, after her pass was placed perfectly into the box and deflected to the feet of Kernen.

“Hannah had an excellent showing today, not only on the score sheet but she continues to do the simple things well and has a knack for making those around her better,” head coach Kacey Burke said.

Just 6:01 following the second goal, junior Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) notched her team-leading third goal of the season. This time Hartmann scored with her head, after Katie Schulz (Plymouth, Minn.) sent a ball into the box from about 10 yards pass the midfield line to put the game out of reach for the visiting Panthers.

The Phoenix dominated in the shots on goal category, outshooting Northern Iowa 11-3 in the game. The Phoenix logged four corners to UNI’s three.

“We are happy with the positive result from today. We generated many opportunities in the attacking third and made sure to put them away. We had a few mental lapses we will look to correct and improve as we look towards the next challenge,” Burke said.

Nastacia Behle improved her record to 2-1-0 on the season, notching two saves while surrendering a goal with 1:50 remaining in the game. After a free kick from the Northern Iowa keeper, the Panthers beat Behle to the ball and headed one in for their only score of the evening.

Milwaukee 4, College of Charleston 2
Kelly Lewers scored twice and Sydney Senn and Kelly Manski both scored their first collegiate goals as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team burst out to a four-goal lead before taking down the College of Charleston 4-2 Friday afternoon as part of the Garnet and Black Classic at Stone Stadium on the campus of South Carolina.

Milwaukee (1-2-0) pounded out 18 shots on the day to just four from the Cougars.

UWM handed Charleston their first loss of the season as they now fall to 2-1-0 on the season after winning both their first two games 2-0.

"It feels great to get the first win of the year," head coach Greg Henschel said. "We feel good about how we played and I think the score sheet pretty accurately reflects how the game went."

UWM jumped out of the gates firing on all cylinders. The Panthers had numerous scoring chances in the opening minutes and were unlucky to find the back of the net in the game's early going.

That all changed in the 36th minute when freshman Sydney Senn came off the bench and scored the first goal of her collegiate career.

"That goal really had a nice build up to it," Henschel said. "Morgan really did well to carry the ball and had it down around the end line and slotted it back and found Sydney, and she just hammered it home."

Just two minutes later, Milwaukee struck again. Senn found Manski who put it away for the first goal as a Panther to make it 2-0 and give Milwaukee a convincing lead heading into the locker room.

"You know what, it won't show up in the box score, but Amy Kauffung really did a lot to make our second goal happen," Henschel said. "She brought it up and was in a position to score and she got brought down, but we kept playing and Sydney was able to find Kelly, who had a really nice strike for the goal."

There was no let up after the break though as UWM continued to pour it on. Stephans drove down the right flank and sent the ball beautifully into the box. Anna Smalley took one touch and laid it off to defending Horizon League Player of the Year Kelly Lewers for an early goal in the second stanza to make it 3-0.

Lewers then made it 4-0 just four minutes later, putting home a rebound right in front of goal in the 57th minute.

Sarah Blakely scored for the Cougars in the 61st on a shot from distance and Hannah Huizenga added a 90th minute goal to for CofC to close out the scoring.

Milwaukee dominated the stat sheet in every facet of the game with a 9-1 edge in corners, an 18-4 advantage in shots and a large majority of possession throughout the game.

Youngstown State 2, VMI 0
Sophomore Kathy Baquero scored her team-best second goal of the season and junior Macey Riese posted her first career goal to lead the Youngstown State women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over VMI on Friday evening at Farmers National Bank Field.

With the win, the Penguin improve to 1-2 on the season while VMI falls to 1-1.

After a scoreless first half that featured 14 shots by the Penguins, Baquero, who led the team with five shots and two shots on goal, gave the YSU a 1-0 lead just 33 seconds into the second half from a pass from senior Kearsten Sego.

Just 10 minutes later, Riese's header from a pass from junior Katie Hohmann pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 55:23 mark of the match.

Those two goals were all the offense goalkeepers Katie Montgomery and Hope Knussman needed to gain the combined shutout and Montgomery's first win of the year.

The Penguins' offense was in full force outshooting the Keydets, 29-1, including 11-0 in shots on goal.

Thirteen different YSU players were credited with shots while nine had shots on goal.

Valparaiso 1, Grand Canyon 1 (2ot)
The Valparaiso women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz. on Friday night, as redshirt freshman Vanesa Abad (Barrington, Ill./Lake Zurich [Ohio State]) found the back of the net for her first career goal in the 63rd minute.

After a relatively even first half, the Crusaders ramped up their effort offensively on the Antelopes in the second half, registering 11 total shot attempts, six of which were on goal.  Valpo would finally break through with the game’s first goal in the 63rd minute.  Sophomore Robin Wenzel (Woodstock, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) took a shot which rang off the post and caromed back out to Abad, who tucked it away to put the Crusaders on top.

Unfortunately for the Crusaders, the lead would last just 11 minutes, as Grand Canyon was awarded a penalty kick and Maria Monterroso converted from the spot to even the match at 1-1.  The Crusaders put a pair of shots on goal late in the second period, but both were saved, and despite out-shooting the Antelopes 6-1 in extra time, Valpo was unable to find the match-winner.

“We did a lot of nice things tonight,” said Crusader head coach John Marovich.  “The goal was a great goal on a counter and service from the end line.  The penalty was unfortunate, but the way we handled Grand Canyon’s pressure in the second half and overtime was nice to see.  We got 10 shots on goal tonight, and now it comes down to the final touch.  I liked how we moved the ball in the second half – the progress was good and we were able to create more chances.”

For the match, the Crusaders out-shot Grand Canyon (0-2-1) by a 22-11 margin and put 10 shots on goal.  Sydney Galvez-Daley (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick [Creighton]) made three saves in the draw, while GCU goalkeeper Blakely Fraasch stopped nine shots.

Morehead State 3, UIC 1
The UIC women's soccer team (0-4-0) dropped a home match against Morehead State (2-0-1) on Friday night at Flames Field by a final score of 3-1. Sophomore Jasmin Carrera netted her second goal of the season in the final period, but the Eagles' three first-half scores were too much to overcome for the Flames.

Carrera's goal came at the 86:59 mark after an assist down the middle of the field from freshman Monica Ramirez, her first helper of the season.

The Flames equaled Morehead State in shots with 11, but the Eagles had nine on target compared to four for UIC.

Morehead State senior Jade Flory posted a hat trick, her first goals of the season, beginning at the 5:52 mark of the first half. Fellow senior Macy Cobb assisted on the play with a cross from the left side into the box.

The reigning Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year, scored her remaining two goals at the 27:01 and 36:01 marks, respectively. Flory transferred to Morehead State after competing two seasons at Youngstown State where she earned first-team All-Horizon League during her sophomore campaign.

UIC goalkeeper Kelly Fritz had an active day in the net as she saved six shots, bringing her yearly total up to 18.

Ohio 1, Wright State 0
An Alexis Milesky goal in the second minute proved to be the only goal of the contest as Ohio defeated the Wright State women's soccer team 1-0 Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Milesky connected on a 20-yard shot from her left foot into the upper left corner of the net at the 1:28 mark of the first half to give the Bobcats the lead for good.

Western Michigan 1, Cleveland State 0
Western Michigan scored with 14 minutes left and held off a late flurry by Cleveland State to claim a 1-0 victory on Friday night at Krenzler Field.

The Vikings fell to 0-3 this year, while WMU improved to 2-0.

The game-winning goal came with 14:01 left in the game when Diana Dedvukaj sent a through ball to Emma Kahn on the right wing. Kahn worked her way into the box and sent a shot to the far post for her second goal of the season.

The goal came just six minutes after CSU's Sarah Wood saved consecutive point blank shots from the Broncos.

CSU had a few good chances for an equalizer late in the contest, but a shot by Sarah Kaiser was wide and the Vikings could not finish a chance in the box off a corner kick from Amanda Sivic.

Wood finished with five saves for CSU.
