Amanda Sivic netted the third hat trick in program history and Sonia Curvelo earned her first victory as head coach at Cleveland State as the Vikings earned a 6-0 victory at Chicago State on Sunday afternoon.
The six goals tied the school record for goals in a game, tying the six tallies against Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006.
Both teams are now 1-3 this season.
Sivic joined Ashley Walchak and Jaime Avona as the only players in CSU women's soccer history with hat tricks. Avona was the last to do it with three tallies at IUPUI on Aug. 24, 2012.
The Vikings dominated play all afternoon, attempting a school record 35 shots, bettering the old mark of 25 shots against Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006. CSU had 14 shots on goal today.
Sivic gave the Vikings an early 1-0 lead with a penalty kick in the 11th minute and came right back with her second goal of the contest at the 22:40 mark after taking a through ball from Megan Barrick.
Chloe Fadenholz made it 3-0 just three minutes later when she netted a goal from 15 yards out off a Haleigh Shingary assist.
The Vikings wasted little time adding to the lead in the second half as Ainhoa Weber scored her first collegiate goal on an 8-yard volley off a corner kick after Allie Sieradzki headed the ball down to her foot.
Kelcey Fischer made it 5-0 with a 20-yard strike in the 53rd minute off an assist from Weber and Sivic finished her day with her third goal of the afternoon with three minutes left.
All 16 players were able to play at least 50 minutes, while Sarah Wood, Jane Piontkowski and Jamie Daniels combined to make four saves for the shutout.
Green Bay 6, North Dakota 0
An offensive showcase was on display Sunday afternoon at Santaga Stadium, as the Green Bay women’s soccer team cruised to a 6-0 victory over North Dakota in nonconference action. The Phoenix improved its record to 3-1-0 on the year, while UND slips to 1-2-0.
“I am proud of the team character shown today and their ability to put a full weekend together. It was a tremendous all around team effort. We wanted to continue building confidence but also clean up a few areas defensively that have let us down previously. I am happy with their response and mentality,” head coach Kacey Burke said.
Green Bay scored early and often, with the first score coming in the 17th minute of the first half off the foot of Brianna Messner (Seymour, Wis.). The sophomore found the ball in perfect position after Sydney Born (Edina, Minn.) had her header attempt saved, leading to the ball that fell right to the foot of Messner.
Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season at 21:05 of the first half, when she maneuvered through the UND defense to score yet another goal in 2014. Senior Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) was credited with the assist on the goal, feeding it to Hartmann in perfect position.
It wasn’t long thereafter before freshman Alex Zeller (Dundee, Ill.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 29th minute of the first half. The goal was setup via the corner kick from Abby Juzwik (Madison, Wis.), who played it into Katie Schulz (Plymouth, Minn.) leading her to line a perfect pass to the head of Zeller who buried it.
Juzwik would score her first goal of the season in the 70th minute of the second half, smashing one into the upper-90 of the goal. The senior sent it in from about 25 yards out, placing it perfectly into the back of the net.
Rhiana Stelter (Waukesha, Wis.) and Karina Fredette (Gatineau, Quebec) would score the fourth and sixth goals of the game, with Fredette’s coming off the corner kick sent directly into the back post. Stelter finished in the 41st minute on a nice cross-in ball from freshman Megan Diamond (Winnipeg, Manitoba).
The Phoenix dominated in all phases of the game, outshooting North Dakota 27-4 in total, including 13-2 in shots on goal. Green Bay also logged 13 corner kicks to UND’s one.
UIC 2, IUPUI 0
The UIC women’s soccer team (1-4-0) earned its first program victory on Sunday afternoon as they defeated IUPUI (1-2-1) by a final score of 2-0 at Flames Field. The Flames notched win number one in their fifth game of the inaugural season as junior Flo Beshiri and sophomore Jasmin Carrera recorded goals for UIC.
“I am very proud of our team today,” said head coach Brian Rigby. “We came back after a tough loss on Friday and played with passion and intelligence. Our ladies should be proud of themselves for what they have accomplished so far. This is a group that has strong character and the talent to play at an elite level.”
Beshiri headed in the game-winner and her first goal of the season at the 10:25 mark of the first half. She was assisted by freshman Christina Hovatter who sent a corner kick into the box for the Beshiri score.
Carrera added the insurance goal in the 73rd minute as she dribbled the ball from midfield and laced a shot into the top left corner of the net. The Chicago native collected her third goal of the season and leads the team with six points.
Goalkeeper Kelly Fritz garnered her first career shutout as she totaled five saves on the afternoon. Fritz now has 23 saves on the season.
The Flames attempted a season-high 15 shots against the Jaguars, including nine on goal. IUPUI keeper Nicole Kulovitz stayed busy trying to protect her net as she finished the match with seven saves.
Youngstown State 3, Robert Morris 1
Despite sloppy playing conditions and a half-hour delay, the Youngstown State played one of its best overall games of the season and knocked off Robert Morris, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex at RMU.
The Penguins won for the second straight time and improved to 2-2 on the year, while the Colonials fell to 1-2.
Junior Katie Hohmann scored a goal and assisted on another while senior Cara Armstrong and freshman Alex Kithcart also scored goals. Senior Chelsey Haney assisted on Hohmann's and Kithcart's goals and Hohmann and senior Brittany Tenis were credited with an assist on Armstrong's goal
From the start, the Penguins controlled possession of the ball and pelted the Robert Morris goalkeepers with 15 shots and 10 shots on goal.
Just 16 minutes into the match, Armstrong scored her first goal of the year to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. Hohmann floated a corner kick toward the goal and, after a rebound off of Tenis, Armstrong kneed the ball into the open net at the 28:49 mark of the first half.
The Penguins extended their lead to 2-0 when Haney fielded a throw in and centered the ball to Hohmann who drilled a one-timer over the goalkeeper from 20 yards out.
With 23 minutes left in the second half, Haney delivered another excellent cross into the box and Kithcart found the upper-right corner of the net for her first career goal.
Robert Morris erased the shutout with a goal with just 3:02 left in the match.
YSU goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky collected two saves and recorded her first win of the season and the 10th of her career.
Detroit 0, Central MIchigan 0 (2ot)
The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team played Central Michigan University to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes Sunday in its home opener at Titan Field. The game was the second straight for Detroit (1-1-1) in which the Titans didn't allow a goal.
The Titans had their chances in the first half, connecting on seven shots during the first 45 minutes, compared to just one shot for the Chippewas (0-2-1). Central Michigan came out strong offensively in the second half, banging a shot off the post and accumulating eight corner kick chances during the second half.
The game remained scoreless, however, after the first 90 minutes as the game went to overtime. During the first overtime period, Central Michigan again was the aggressor offensively, collecting two corner kicks and firing three shots in the first overtime frame.
Freshman goalkeeper Marina Manzo (Washington Twp., Mich. / Romeo) was up to the task, saving the one shot on goal during the first overtime. Manzo finished with three saves in net during the contest. Manzo recorded her second-straight shutout in goal.
Both teams had a shot during the second overtime period, but Detroit's was the only one on net. Sophomore Kristen Tobin (Bay City, Mich. / John Glenn) had a shot on goal, but it was corralled by CMU goalkeeper Maddy Bunnell, who finished the game with six saves in net for Central Michigan.
Senior defender Alyssa Lotito (Macomb, Mich. / Eisenhower) had a game-high five shots for the Titans, while junior Sara Zawacki (Dearborn, Mich. / Marian) tallied three shots on net during the match.
Detroit finished the game with 15 shots, six on goal, while Central Michigan had 11 shots and three shots on goal. CMU had a big advantage in corner kicks, 13-4.
Valparaiso 0, Northern Arizona 0 (2ot)
For just the second time in program history, the Valparaiso women’s soccer team has played to three straight draws after playing 110 minutes of scoreless soccer in a 0-0 (2ot) tie at Northern Arizona on Sunday afternoon. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Galvez-Daley (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick [Creighton]) picked up her second shutout of the season, stopping four shots.
The vast majority of both teams’ chances came in the opening 45 minutes, as the Crusaders peppered NAU with 10 shots, five of which were on goal, and earned five corner kicks. Meanwhile, the Lumberjacks registered five shot attempts, including three on frame. But the game remained scoreless heading into halftime.
“We had a very nice start to the game today,” said Crusader head coach John Marovich. “Our first 20 minutes were very creative – we had some very good movement and I was pleased with that. We were inefficient in the final third, but I thought we had really good ideas in the first half.”
Valpo tallied just one shot attempt over the final 65 minutes, while Northern Arizona totaled just four shots and Galvez-Daley had to make just one stop after intermission. The game would end in a 0-0 draw, the Crusaders’ second clean sheet of the season, both of which have been 0-0 ties.
“As the game wore on, I think playing overtime on Friday and playing at altitude today caught up to us a bit,” said Marovich. “I think the game had a real different pace to it after the first half. But for our kids to battle thru two overtimes with a short turnaround, it’s always good to be able to pull out a result. We have to keep working towards our expectations, which we haven’t reached yet, but the good thing is that our team is taking shape. We have another solid defensive group, and I actually think the attacking ideas are getting there – now it’s just about working on those final touches.”
#12 South Carolina 2, Milwaukee 0
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team had two golden chances on the attack but just couldn't find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to 12th-ranked South Carolina at Stone Stadium Sunday in the final contest of the Garnet and Black Classic.
UWM (1-3-0) was incredibly unlucky on offense, having a penalty kick saved in the game's opening minutes and hitting the post later on in the contest.
South Carolina (4-0-0) has not given up a goal this season.
The Panthers finish the tournament tied with Boston University for second place in points with three, but finish third overall based on goals allowed.
Rachael Van Keulen and Morgan LaPlant were both named to the all-tournament team.
"I'm disappointed with the result but I'm very encouraged by our potential," Milwaukee head coach Greg Henschel said. "Our passing and our defending really improved this weekend and those are positives that we'll take away heading into our home opener."
Milwaukee looked to have caught an early brake when Vienna Behnke was taken down in the box in the 11th minute. Sophomore Maria Stephans confidently struck the PK but South Carolina keeper Sabrina D'Angelo - one of the best keepers in the nation - guessed right and made a full-extension dive to keep the Panthers off the board.
Down 1-0, UWM was again unlucky not to find the back of the net. Morgan LaPlant stole the ball from the SC defense and was dragged down. On the ensuing free kick, Amy Kauffung's shot from just outside the box looked to be going toward the far post but was poked away at the last second by a defender.
Then, in the 87th minute, LaPlant again stole the ball near the box and had a one-on-one chance with the keeper. Cutting across the box, D'Angelo appeared to be beaten as LaPlant rifled her shot it from just inside the 18 but it blasted off the post.
Sophie Groff scored both goals for the Gamecocks, who outshot UWM 16-4 on the day.
Paige Lincicum made five saves and was a key player all day long against one of the top teams in the nation.
Illinois 1, Oakland 0
Behind a solid defensive effort anchored by Alison Holland, the Oakland women's soccer team held Illinois scoreless in regulation before falling in overtime, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the OU Soccer Field. Holland faced 29 shots making 10 saves as the Golden Grizzlies held Jannelle Flaws, the nation's leading scorer last season, without a tally before surrendering the golden goal in the 98th minute.
"We gave it everything we had and actually put ourselves in a good position to win and get three points in overtime," said head coach Margaret Saurin. "We created two chances early before Illinois put their chance away. We could have come away with a win but it is a game of chances that you have to take but unfortunately, we didn't and they went down and scored on the other end."
In final minutes of regulation, Illinois turned up the pressure but the defense stood tall blocking a shot and breaking up two corner kick set pieces. Holland made two saves and got some help as Illinois' Conine Casey placed a bouncing header off the right post in the 88th minute.
Oakland's two good chances to win came in overtime. Jenna Taylor got into the box on the right as Illinois keeper Michelle Denley came out for the challenge. Taylor got around Denley and moved to the open net but could not get a shot off as the last defender raced in and broke up the opportunity.
In the 93rd minute, Vlad Gurovski broke into the top of the box making an extra touch to get past Denley's challenge. However, she barely missed with a low shot to the right side of the open net as a defender closed in.
In the 97th minute, Nicole Breece broke in alone down the left side heading towards the goal. Holland came out to cut off the angle but Breece fired a well placed shot into the upper right corner of the net giving the Fighting Illini the 1-0 win.
