CHICAGO, Ill. – Sophomore Katie Pokrandt (Eau Claire, Wis.) carded a 77 and three Phoenix golfers fired rounds of 80 as the Green Bay women’s golf team defeated UIC 323-317 on Saturday in a dual meet at Cog Hill

Sophomore Caitlan Smollen of UIC took home the individual crown by carding a career-low 76. She bested Green Bay’s Pokrandt by one stroke to collect the first individual victory in program history.

“I was very pleased with our overall performance today,” said UIC head coach Carol Rhoades. “We started out slow and came back strong. We have worked hard the last week on our scoring around the green and that is starting to show dividends. Our goal of 320 is in reach. We are anxious to participate in the Cougar Classic against a strong field.”

Smollen shot even par on the back nine to finish with a 76 and best her previous career-low round of 79 at the 2012 Detroit Titans Fall Classic.

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Julia Montgomery carded a 6-over-par 78 in the final round to lead the Oakland women's golf team at the Mary Fossum Invitational on Forest Akers West Golf Course on Sunday. The Golden Grizzlies improved five shots from the second to third rounds, posting an overall score of 975 (+111).

"Great to see a freshman continue to lead us," said OU coach Russ Cunningham. "We made too many mistakes from the fairway and with wedges in our hand.  We have a couple of weeks before our next fall event, so we will work on playing smarter and learning from this weekend's play."
Montgomery finished the tournament with an overall score of 239 (+23) and in a tie for 56th place. This marks the second straight tournament that she has been the top finisher for the Golden Grizzlies.

Kassandra Komma and Haylee Zyber each recorded a round of 82 on the final day of competition. Marianna Stepp tallied a score of 83 in her final round to post the final score of the day for Oakland.

"This is a much better team than they showed this weekend," said Cunningham. "And I know they're going to work hard to prove that fact."
Michigan State captured the team title after shooting an overall score of 892 (+28). The Spartans edged Big Ten foe Ohio State by four shots. MSU's Liz Nagel won medalist honors with an overall score of 217 (+1).

The Golden Grizzlies will have a few weeks off before the next fall event at the Mid-American Conference Preview on Oct. 7-8. The 54-hole event will take place at The Hawthorne's Golf Club in Fishers, Ind.

CHICAGO, IL.--Three Titans finished in the top six as the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team concluded play at Chicago State's Cougar Classic on Tuesday, held at the Par 72, 5,914-yard Starboard Course at Harborside International Golf Center.

"With a couple of new faces in the line-up and with only playing four to start yesterday, I was very happy with the way we played," said head coach Terri Anthony-Ryan. "The conditions were better today and we shot a good score so for a season opener, I was very pleased."

Detroit finished in third with a 617 (311-306), just five shots in back of Indiana State (612) and eight behind host Chicago State (609).

Senior Christina Thorne led the way with a 1-over 73 on the final round to post a 147 (74-73) scorecard, tying for third place just four shots behind the victor. It was her 12th career top-10 effort and she also finished the tournament with a team-best 24 pars and five birdies.

Cleveland State senior Micaela Cronin tied the school record with a final round 72 and set the CSU 36 hole record with a 146 en route to a runner-up finish at the Chicago State Cougar Classic that concluded on Tuesday at the par-72, 5,914-yard Haborside International Golf Course.

As a team, the Vikings finished fourth in the 13 team field, carding rounds of 315-307 (622). Today's final round 307 was the second lowest round in program history, topped by a 305 at the BGSU Falcon Invitational on April 14, 2013.

Cronin followed yesterday's 74 with a 72 today, tying the lowest round in school history that was set by Katie Broere on March 14, 2008, at the Northern Illinois Invitational. Cronin finished as the individual runner-up, just one shot behind medalist Brooke Melvin of Chicago State who shot 75-70 (145).
Cronin's 146 total shattered the old 36 hole school record of 152 which was shared by Ariel Sparrow and Madeline Kaminski.

The Flames competed in their fifth event of the Fall season Monday and Tuesday at Chicago State’s Cougar Classic and placed 11th out of 13 teams. Junior Ryann Gilley was the Flames’ best finisher as she placed in a tie for 27th with a 36-hole total of 160.

Green Bay placed 13th with scores of 334-328 at the Chicago State Cougar Classic. The Phoenix were led by sophomore Sammi Grunder who shot rounds of 81-75, good for 18th place. Katie Pokrandt, the 2013 Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, shot rounds of 82-82 to place T45.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – For the second-straight Tuesday, Green Bay junior Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) entered the final 18 holes of a golf tournament trailing the individual leader by multiple shots. For the second-straight Tuesday, Boockmeier fired an under par round and claimed a tournament title, carding a 2-under par 70 at Stone Ridge Golf Club to win the John Piper Intercollegiate by one stroke.
Green Bay finished one-shot out of second place, and four back of champion Marshall University.

Smashing the program record for a 54-hole tournament by 10 strokes, the Valparaiso men's golf team finished in second place as it competed in the final round of the John Piper Intercollegiate at Stone Ridge G.C. in Bowling Green, Ohio on Tuesday.

All four Crusaders who contributed to the team score on Tuesday posted identical rounds of one-over-par 73. Freshman Nick Seitz (Xenia, Ohio/Carroll) used his round of 73 to close the tournament at even-par 216, good for a tie for fifth place. Redshirt sophomore Jared Magoline (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac [Marquette]) closed out his first competitive tournament at Valpo in a tie for 13th, posting a total of 219.

Valparaiso continues its fall schedule in a week and a half, taking to the links at Ruffled Feather G.C. in Lemont, Ill. on Saturday, Sept. 28 for day one of the John Dallio Memorial, hosted by DePaul. Last season, Kyle Henning earned individual medalist honors at the event.

Youngstown State sophomore D.J. Holub tied for third place at the BGSU John Piper Intercollegiate which concluded on Tuesday. Holub had a three-round score of 215 at the Stone Ridge Golf Club.
In the team scoring, YSU had an 883 (288-302-294) to finish fifth out of six teams.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (9/17/2013) -- Senior Brendan Leonard might have had a hiccup in the early part of the second round yesterday, but he was back to his old self on Tuesday with an even-par 71 as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team finished up play at the Wolverine Intercollegiate.

"This course was very tough and it made you pay if you missed a fairway or green," said head coach Mark Engel. "The biggest thing is that we improved from round to round and playing at a course and tournament like this will only help us."

Leonard ended the event with a 220 (70-79-71) tying for 28th place with freshman teammate Kyle Gaines. Leonard – who totaled a 226 at Michigan's tournament as a sophomore – started the event with a 1-under 70 yesterday, which included six birdies, and then opened today's final round with three more in the first seven holes. He would go on to make eight-straight pars and finished the 54-hole tournament leading the team with 10 birdies.

Michigan State took home the team title after shooting 851 (-1). The Spartans edged Lamar by two shots and host Michigan by five. San Jose State's Cody Blick shot an even-par score of 71 to post a 10-under-par score of 203, winning medalist honors by three shots.

UDM will have almost two weeks of practice before teeing off again at the Cleveland State Invitational, held at the Barrington Golf Club in Aurora, Ohio, from Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

Evan Bowser shot a 2-under-par 69 and Jake Thompson posted a 2-over-par score of 73 to lead the Oakland men's golf team at the Wolverine Intercollegiate on Tuesday at U-M Golf Course. The Golden Grizzlies improved 18 shots from the second to third round, tallying an overall score of 901 (301-309-291/+49) and finishing in 11th place.

"Today was better, but we have a lot of work to do if we want to compete against the BCS schools," said OU coach Russ Cunningham. "This team has the physical skills to play great golf, but they will all have to adjust their mental game and do a better job of recognizing the variables to produce consistent results."

Bowser led the charge on the final day with a bogey-free round, posting 16 pars and two birdies. He finished in a tie for 22nd place with an overall score of 218 (+5). Mark Foster shot 75 in his final round and tallied a 44th-place finish with an overall score of 224 (+11). Thompson recorded a tie for 48th-place finish with a score of 227 (+14), improving six shots from Round 2 to Round 3.

The Golden Grizzlies will have a short turnaround as competition at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate will begin on Saturday, hosted by Indiana. Wolf Run Country Club is located in Indianapolis.
