INDIANAPOLIS – Weather toyed with the Midwest on Friday night, forcing the cancelation of three Horizon League matches. However, of the four matches that went on, League teams collected victories in three, with Loyola, Valparaiso and Green Bay earning wins.
Valparaiso 2, Western Michigan 0
Valparaiso made the most of its four shots on goal, knocking off visiting Western Michigan, 2-0.
Kristen Manski tossed a shutout for Valparaiso (3-2-1), making six saves on the night. The shutout was the third of the year for Manski.
The Crusaders found the eventual game-winning goal in the 41st minute, as Tara Ellis converted off a free kick from 20 yards outside the goal for her first goal of the year.
Taking the 1-0 lead into the half, Valparaiso picked up an important insurance goal in the 59th minute. Kelsey Draper’s shot on goal was saved, but Luisa Desario was there to convert the rebound for her third goal of the year.
Loyola 2, Yale 1 (OT)
After losing a one-goal lead, Loyola rebounded in overtime, getting past Yale, 2-1, at the Loyola Soccer Park.
Loyola (2-4-0) snapped a four-match losing streak as Ana Claudia Michelini scored three minutes into the second overtime to send the Ramblers to victory. Tessa Daniels sent a long ball to Sammy Gage, whose cross to Michelini was converted.
It was Gage who gave the Ramblers a 1-0 lead 30:37 into the match, finishing a pass from Jessie Hubly. Yale scored in the 70th minute to send the match to overtime.
Green Bay 4, Michigan Tech 2
Returning to the friendly confines of Aldo Santaga Stadium, Green Bay cruised to a 4-2 victory over visiting Michigan Tech.
Green Bay (2-4-0) raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first half behind Megan Braatz and Maria Lillge, who scored in the second and 44th minutes, respectively, to stake the Phoenix to a lead they would not relinquish.
Opening the second half, Lillge would tally her second goal of the match, and in turn, her first career multi-goal effort. Renee Therrien closed the scoring for Green Bay, who set a new season-high for goals.
Akron 2, Cleveland State 0
Returning home to Krenzler Field, Cleveland State suffered a 2-0 setback to visiting Akron on Friday night.
Cleveland State (2-3-0) played Akron to a scoreless draw in the first half, but two goals by the Zips in the second half secured the victory. The Vikings had 10 shots in the match, four on goal, but a tally by Akron’s Megan Waskowski in the 66th minute proved to be the game-winner.
