Green Bay, Oakland and Milwaukee Collect Wins in the Pool over Weekend

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams remained unbeaten in their home pool on Thursday night, as both squads earned dual meet victories over South Dakota at the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium. The Phoenix women claimed nine events in a 151-91 win, improving to 7-0 on the year, while the men’s squad picked up eight victories in its third straight home win (154-89).

Green Bay had several multiple-event winners on Thursday, including sophomore Racheal Weiland (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), who won twice individually and also swam on a winning relay squad. Weiland claimed the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:13.22 and the 500 freestyle in 5:11.76 before teaming up with Claire Walters (Northfield, Minn.), Natalie Neuwirth (Stevens Point, Wis.) and Claire Friederick (Lancaster, Wis.) for a win in the 200 free relay (1:38.28) in the meet’s final event.

Walters also won the 50 free (24.85) earlier in the night and swam on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:49.75) with Emily Gomez (Burlington, Wis.), Haley Lucas (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and Autumn Roepsch (Dubuque, Iowa) in the meet’s opening race.

Neuwirth and Lucas were also solo winners on Thursday, as Neuwirth took the 100 free in 53.81 and Lucas won the 200 butterfly in 2:09.74. Others claiming individual victories for the Phoenix women were Crystal Franzwa (Winona, Minn.) on the 1-meter diving board (250.20) and Alyssa Udean (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) in the 1000 free (10:34.06).

Five different Phoenix men won multiple events on Thursday night, as Ryan Korslin (Rudolph, Wis.), Willem Poelmans (Hasselt, Belgium), Connor Andrew (Centennial, Colo.), Casey Murphy (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and Ben Loeffelholz (Dubuque, Iowa) were all two-time winners.

Korslin and Andrew teamed up with Evan Hill (Jefferson, Wis.) and Cole Hackney (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) for a win in the 200 medley relay (1:34.58) before Korslin won the 200 breast (2:09.62) and Andrew took the 500 free (4:49.95).

Poelmans, Murphy and Loeffelholz were all members of the winning 200 free relay team (1:25.58) to end the night, along with senior Robert Miner (Madison, Wis.). Poelmans was an individual winner in the 200 free (1:43.84), Murphy won the 50 free (21.71) and Loeffelholz took the 100 free (47.35).

Also earning a win for the Phoenix men was sophomore Tanner Nordlund (Rice, Minn.), who posted a winning score of 248.05 in the 1-meter dive.

Thursday marked the final home meet of the calendar year for the Phoenix, which doesn’t return to the Dorschel Natatorium until Jan. 11, 2014 when it welcomes Horizon League foe UIC. The Green Bay teams are next in action Nov. 22-24 at the IUPUI Invite in Indianapolis.

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland's Tricia Grant scored a 344.47 in the three-meter diving competition against Wayne State Friday evening, setting a new team standard in the event to help lead the Golden Grizzlies to a 172-123 win over the Warriors at the OU Aquatic Center. The Oakland men were also victorious, getting two individual wins apiece from Grant Harding, Mario Rusnak and Amr el Sayed to beat Wayne State 171-122.

The meet featured shorter distances in the butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke, swapping the 200-yard distance with 50-yard races. The individual medley raced at 100 yards.

"Today we had the opportunity to move some people around and swim some different distances, and we saw some positive results," Oakland head coach Pete Hovland said. "We thought the team performed very well and raced well. They're concentrating and focusing on the little things."

After missing the team record two weeks ago, Grant's score of 344.47 surpassed the previous team mark of 332.25 in the three-meter dive. Grant added a win for Oakland in the one-meter dive with a score of 290.10.

In all, the Oakland women won 11 of 14 individual events, including the dives; eight swimmers gathered the nine individual swimming wins. Leading the way was Kyra Rietveld, who was victorious in the 100 back and 50 free. Also winning for the Golden Grizzlies were Nikki Flynn (1000 free, 10:43.64), Melissa VanderMeulen (50 breast, 30.44), Patricia Aschan (100 fly, 59.18), Takara Martin (100 breast, 1:06.47), Emily Ludema (500 free, 5:07.93), Julia Vela (50 fly, 26.26) and Karin Tomeckova (100 IM, 58.74).

Oakland also won the 200 medley and 200 free relays against their regional foe. In the medley, Tomeckova, VanderMeulen, Vela and Allison Bellford finished in 1:46.33; the quartet of Rietveld, Bellford, Jill Carps and Flynn claimed the 200 free relay win in 1:38.23.

For the men, the Golden Grizzlies won the first 11 events in the pool to cruise to a 171-122 victory. After leading off Oakland's 200 medley relay team with a solid backstroke effort, Harding added individual wins in the 50 free (21.39) and 100 back (49.77). Rusnak and el Sayed, who joined Harding and Hrafn Traustason in the meet-opening medley relay win, were also two-time individual winners. Rusnak won both the 50 fly (22.82) and the 100 fly (50.50), while el Sayed took control of the 100 free (46.63) and 200 free (1:40.66).

Traustason was one of five Oakland swimmers to capture a single individual victory, winning the 100 breaststroke in 59.67. Steve Neill (1000 free, 9:55.11), Aleksander Danielewski (50 back, 24.06), Matyas Keresztes (50 breast, 27.15) and Mitch Alters (500 free, 4:48.55) were also victorious for Oakland.

The Golden Grizzlies are back in action Friday-Saturday, Dec. 6-7, at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.

Stevens Point, Wis. - For the eighth-straight season, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming team took the top spot at the Stevens Point Border Battle, wrapping up the two-day meet with more impressive times Saturday.

UWM won the meet with 773.5 points. Host Stevens Point was second with 638 and South Dakota was third with 576.5.

"On a weekend as a whole, we achieved our goal," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Clements said. "The team realized that no matter how hard we train or how hard we work during the week, they're still capable of putting up fast times. We saw a lot this week and that's why we're here. We're here to push ourselves and work hard all week and then swim and execute all weekend. And not just swim, but excel in each event. We did that and I was happy with the weekend."

Milwaukee busted out of the gates Saturday, taking the top three spots in the first individual event. Nic Halverson won the 400 IM with a blazing time of 4:12.31. Kenny Stelpflug was right behind at 4:17.79 for second and Jeff Maxwell was third in 4:24.47.

Nearly the same group also dominated the 1650 free. Stelpflug this time took first, winning the mile-long event in 16 minutes, 45.50 seconds. N. Halverson was second in 16:52.44 and Tim Halverson was fourth in 17:06.45.

UWM also went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly. Mike Lucchesi claimed first with a winning time of 51.62, just ahead of freshman Max Ward at 52.76 for second place.

Senior Chris Jenkyns took the top spot in the 100 backstroke. Jenkyns touched the wall first in 53.11 for nearly a two-second victory.

The Panthers' also won the 800 free relay as N. Halverson, Stelpflug, Lucchesi and T. Halverson combined to finish the event in 6:59.89, nearly eight seconds ahead of second place.

In the 200 medley relay, Jenkyns, Teddy Stackman, Ward and Lucchesi teamed up to post a time of 1:37.86, just missing the top spot and taking second.

T. Halverson just placed second in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.86, fractions of a second from a win.

In the 100 breaststroke, Joe Chokran came in fourth in 1:01.77, followed tightly by brother David Chokran in 1:02.66 for fifth.

The Panthers will now take a few weeks rest before returning to the pool at the end of the month. Milwaukee heads to the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational for a three-day meet Dec. 6-8 in Iowa City, Iowa.

Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming team received contributions from across the board in another strong showing in the second and final day at the Stevens Point Border Battle Saturday.

Milwaukee came out on top of area meet for the fifth-straight year, tallying an impressive 748 points. Northern Michigan came in second at 542. South Dakota was third with 485, followed by Minnesota State (345) and Stevens Point (314).

Milwaukee started the day with an impressive win in the 200 medley relay. Becky Yokosh, Emily McClellan, Diana Diel and Sierra Townsend combined to post a time of 1:46.64, a full three seconds ahead of the next team.

Townsend and Diel then carried that momentum over into the 100 butterfly where the duo finished 1-2. Townsend won the event in 59.31 seconds, just ahead of Diel at 59.43.

Natalie Johnson posted another landslide victory in her first season on campus. The freshman won the 1650 free with a time of 17 minutes, 33.99 seconds, nearly 50 seconds ahead of second place.

Yokosh took the top spot in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall first in 58.23. McClellan won the 100 breast in 1:02.90, five seconds ahead of the next finisher. Yontz won the 200 free in 1:55.20, a new season-best time.

In the 800 free relay, Townsend, Yontz, Kelsey Abbas and Johnson teamed up to post a winning time of 7:56.91, nearly seven seconds ahead of the next team.

UWM had three of the top-five finishers in the 400 IM. Kristin Zablocki was third at 4:44.17, Kiersten Seidel was fourth in 4:46.21 and Hilary Woldt was fifth at 4:48.19.

The Valpo women's swimming team dropped a dual meet to Notre Dame Friday 219-60.

Junior Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan) recorded an 18:40.87 time in the 1,650-yard freestyle, earning her a third-place finish.

Sophomore Ciara Lightner (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) turned in a 1:04.00 time in the 100-yard backstroke for fourth place.

Senior Ali Taubert (Bloomington, Ill./University) finished second in the 500-yard freestyle by virtue of a 5:35.72 time.

Lauren Knop (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) also registered a second place finish. The junior stopped the clock at 1:04.26 in the 100-yard butterfly.

The team of freshman Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine), Lightner, Knop and fellow freshman Allie Berry (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) completed the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:44.85, good for second place.

The next scheduled event is Saturday when the Crusaders are expected to take on Western Illinois at 1:00 pm.

The Valparaiso men's swimming team dropped a 155-129 decision while the women fell 152-129 at Western Illinois University Saturday in Macomb.

Senior Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) blew past the competition in the 1000-yard freestyle with an 11:18.40 time, nearly 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. She followed that up with an additional first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.

Teammate Ciara Lightner (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) took first-place in the 100-yard backstroke thanks to a 1:03.69 finish. The sophomore edged out WIU's Abby Hansen, who clocked in at 1:04.01.

Freshman Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) and Western Illinois' Sarah Rosenhauer had a photo finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. It was determined that Rosenhauer (1:12.05) touched the wall just ahead of Trimpe (1:12.09). Trimpe later sought her revenge in the 100-yard freestyle, netting first place with a 57.55 time.

Junior Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan) continued to impress as she took home first-place in the 200-yard butterfly. Segatto stopped the clock at 2:16.59, nearly four full seconds of the rest of the pack. Her 100-yard butterfly victory was much closer. Segatto touched the wall at 1:02.74, just a fingernail ahead of WIU's Kelsey Kirchhoefer (1:02.82).

The team of Segatto, Trimpe, Ali Taubert (Bloomington, Ill./University) and Makenna Cannon (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) enjoyed a group win in the 800-yard freestyle relay as they registered a 8:26.48 time.

On the men's side, Frederick Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) earned the Crusaders nine points with a 1:00.12 time in the men's 100-yard breaststroke.

Sophomore Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) cleared the two-minute mark (1:59.93) as he claimed first place in the 200-yard butterfly, He later won the 100-yard butterfly with a 53.40 finish.

Senior Tate Wegehaupt (Tigard, Ore./Tigard) was victorious in another 50-yard freestyle race Saturday. He outlasted teammate Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West) by .27 of a second. Wegehaupt earned his second individual win a couple races later in the 200-yard breaststroke, thanks to a 2:13.34 time.

Freshman Brian Wasicak (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) got in on the fun, turning in a 4:57.09 finish in the 500-yard freestyle, good for first place.

The Crusaders will have a couple weeks off to prepare for the Calvin College Invitational in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The first day of the meet is scheduled for Thursday, December 5th.
