PENDLETON, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay stayed alive with an 8-5 victory Friday over the University of Detroit Mercy in the consolation bracket of the Horizon League Softball Championship at Legends Field in Pendleton, Ind.

The Phoenix (20-24) erased an early two-run deficit with two runs in the first inning and three more in the second, thanks, in part, to four errors by Detroit. Missy Schleicher knocked in Melani Niederer in the first with a single to center, and pinchrunner Ashleigh Racer scored when Detroit first baseman Caitlin McPartlin mishandled the throw

In the second, Ashley Billerbeck homered to right field to give Green Bay the lead for good. Two batters later, Jenna Nitti scored on a sacrifice fly by Krissy Hanson, and the Phoenix added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth.

Katie Cooney (6-10) picked up her second victory in as many days. She scattered five runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts. Amanda Margelofsky pitched the final 1 2/3 to secure the win.

Kara Spinelli (3-22) took the loss after giving up eight runs, only four of which were earned, as Detroit (7-42) committed five errors to none for Green Bay.

Green Bay advances to meet fifth-seeded Butler University today at 6 p.m. ET.
