2011 Horizon League Women's Soccer All-League Release
INDIANAPOLIS – University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee senior Sarah Hagen has been named Horizon League Women’s Soccer Player of the Year for the third consecutive season, as the Panthers nearly swept the League’s individual awards.
In voting of the Horizon League’s coaches, Hagen earned Offensive Player of the Year accolades, while freshman teammate Amy Kauffung collected Newcomer of the Year honors. Milwaukee goalkeeper Jamie Forbes was tabbed Goalkeeper of the Year and split the Defensive Player of the Year vote with Detroit’s Alexandra Suschak.
Leading Milwaukee to an unblemished 8-0-0 Horizon League record, 16-2-0 overall mark, 12th straight Horizon League regular season title and a national ranking throughout the year, head coach Michael Moynihan collected his eighth Coach of the Year award.
Hagen was the unanimous choice for both Horizon League Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year after leading the League in goals (22) and points (50). The 22 goals are third-most in League history, trailing Hagen’s 24-goal seasons of 2008 and 2009. With 89 career goals and 201 career points, Hagen is the League’s career leader in both categories.
With her third consecutive Player of the Year, Hagen becomes the only player in League history to achieve the feat. In her career, Hagen earned 15 League Player of the Week honors.
Helping to anchor Milwaukee’s back line, Kauffung becomes the fifth Panther to earn Newcomer of the Year honors, joining Lisa Bengtsson, Ginny Graczyk, Hagen and current junior Helen Steinhauser.
Kauffung helped her teammate Forbes turn in nine shutouts on the year, along with a 0.64 goals-against-average, presently the sixth-best single season mark in League history. Forbes has rejected 63 shots this season, beaten just 11 times in 17 matches.
Joining Forbes as Defensive Player of the Year is Detroit’s Suschak, who helped lead the Titans to the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament. Chipping in two goals, Suschak controlled a defense that allowed just 0.66 goals per game over the course of the season.
Milwaukee’s Keara Thompson and Steinhauser rounded out the quartet of Panthers on the First Team, joining Hagen and Forbes. Along with Suschak, Detroit’s Abby McCollum and Kaitlyn Quarrell earned first team honors. Wright State placed two players on the first team, seniors Brittany Persaud and Bekah Bonny. Two of the League’s leading scorers - Katie Griswold of Butler and Cleveland State’s Natalie Daniels - rounded out the 11-woman roster.
The Horizon League Women’s Soccer Championship kicks off on Tuesday, Nov. 1, when No. 3 Valparaiso hosts No. 6 Butler at 2 p.m. ET. At 4 p.m. ET, No. 4 Cleveland State welcomes No. 5 Wright State to Krenzler Field. Top-seeded Milwaukee will host the semifinals and championship, beginning on Friday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. ET, live on the Horizon League Network. The League’s automatic bid will be decided on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. ET.
