Horizon League women's soccer teams opened the 2015 campaign on Friday night, posting four victories and a tie in five matches. Youngstown State, UIC, Northern Kentucky and Milwaukee all notched wins in their season opening contests.
Youngstown State 1, VMI 0: Senior Karlee Kline scored a goal in the 30th minute and that was all the offense the Youngstown State women's soccer team needed in a 1-0 win over VMI in the 2015 season opener. Read more...(link)
UIC 2, Morehead State 1: Junior Jasmin Carrera scored and added an assist to lead the Flames while sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Fritz made four saves in net. Carrera’s goal in the eighth minute came off the rebound of a penalty kick to give the Flames an early 1-0 lead. UIC extended its lead to 2-0 at the 23:18 mark on a goal by sophomore Olivia Everin, assisted by Carrera. Everin led UIC with six shots (two on goal) as the Flames outshot Morehead State 12-8 in the contest. Read more...(link)
Northern Kentucky 3, IPFW 1: Sophomore forward Jessica Frey led the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team with two goals on Friday night as the Norse defeated IPFW, 3-1, at NKU Soccer Stadium to open the 2015 season. Read more...(link)
Milwaukee 1, Western Illinois 0: Sophomore Anna Smalley scored in the 52nd minute and junior Paige Lincicum recorded the shutout to send the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Western Illinois University Friday night at Engelmann Stadium. The victory was the first for the Panthers in a season opener in four years, controlling the game against the Leathernecks for the majority of the night. Read more...(link)
Cleveland State 1, Butler 1 (2OT): The Cleveland State women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Butler in the 2015 season opener on Friday night at Krenzler Field. The Bulldogs struck first just 11 minutes into the game when Halle Stelbasky scored to the far post from just inside the box. Randi Delong and Sophia Maccagnone assisted on the goal. It would stay that way until the 52:52 mark when Allie Sieradzki scored to knot the game. Sieradzki stole a pass at the top of the box and beat the Butler goalkeeper 1-on-1 to even the contest. Toledo 3, Detroit 2 (2OT): A double-overtime thriller opened the 2015 season for the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team, but the Titans gave up the golden goal early in second overtime to fall 3-2 to visiting University of Toledo at Titan Field. Read more...(link).
Illinois 4, Oakland 1: Sydney Gagner potted her first collegiate goal in the second half as Oakland dropped its season opener at Illinois, 4-1. Keeper Alison Holland made three saves in the defeat. Read more...(link)
Louisville 2, Wright State 1: Aaliyah Patten scored her first collegiate goal late in the contest, but it wasn't enough as Louisville tallied two first-half goals and held on for a 2-1 decision Friday night at Lynn Stadium in the season opener for both teams. Read more...(link)
(9) Notre Dame 6, Valparaiso 0: Seven different players made their Crusader debuts on Friday, including a pair of true freshmen earning starting assignments in their first collegiate action. With returning goalkeeper Sydney Galvez-Daley still on the shelf following offseason surgery, rookie Drew Moulton received the start in goal and made 11 saves, the most by a Valpo goalkeeper since October of 2012.
