MILWAUKEE, WIS. --- Day Two of the Horizon League Outdoor Championships were highlighted by two new Horizon League records. UIC's Kellie Schuh won the women's pole vault with a leap of 3.87m and Milwaukee's Durell Busby broke his own League record with a time of 14.30 during the 110-meter hurdle prelims.

Milwaukee got off to a dominating start when Shelby Schaal and Laura Hamel went 1-2 in the women’s heptathlon. Schaal came into the day leading with 2,851 points and never looked back. She won the long jump with a leap of 5.43m and the javelin with a throw of 36.17m, ending the day with 4,574 points. Hamel also had a good day, taking third in the long jump. The senior finished the competition with 4,111 points. UIC’s Jennifer Johnson (3,695), Detroit’s Hana Hunt (3,594) and Wright State’s Sarah Ann Blount (3,588) rounded out the top-5.

Next to finish was the men’s decathlon. Milwaukee’s Ben Crogan had a strong day, winning the 110mH (15.24) and pole vault (4.80m) and taking third in the discus throw (29.12m). He finished the competition with 6,146 points. Detroit’s Taylor Hennrick wasn’t far behind, earning 5,772 points, taking second in both the discus throw and pole vault and winning the 1500m run in 5:00.45. Freshman Matt Marzahl of UIC garnered 5,730 points for third place and Butler’s Mick Wang finished fourth with 4,763 points.

At the end of the first day, Milwaukee was leading in the women’s team standings with 56.50 points. Youngstown State is currently in second with 48 points, followed by 3. UIC (35), 4. Loyola (32), 5. Butler (16), 6. Valparaiso (13.50), 7. Wright State (8) and 7. Detroit (8).  Milwaukee is also leading the men’s rankings with 59 points through seven events. Butler is in second with 36 while 3. UIC (31), 4. YSU (30), 5. Detroit (25), 6. Loyola (22), and 7. Valpo (10) round out the competition.

In the women’s 100m hurdles, Cassandra Lloyd advanced to tomorrow’s finals. The defending hurdler and Horizon League record holder will look to better her current time of 13.62 she set back in 2010.

UIC senior Kellie Schuh is the new Horizon League record holder in the pole vault after leaping 3.87m (12-8.25). She breaks Erin Havener’s (Milwaukee) previous record of 3.85m that she set in 2009 and vaulted again last year.

Senior Kaitlyn Griffith of YSU won the hammer throw for the second year in a row with a toss of 55.95m (183-07). Valparaiso’s Sarah Drozdowski took second with a distance of 52.74m (173-00).

In the final event of the night, Samantha Hamilton won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:36.44. She won the event last year with a time of 10:56.87. The time is a new season best for the junior.

On the men’s side, Youngstown State’s Bobby Grace won the men’s hammer throw with a distance of 57.98m (190-03), a season best for the sophomore. YSU also had scorers in Benjamin Goodnight (4^th, 53.27m) and Caleb Schwan (6^th, 51.97m).

During the prelims of the 110m hurdles, UWM’s Durell Busby broke his own Horizon League record with a time of 14.30. He set last year’s record with a time of 14.40. Busby, along with teammates Dexter Schleis, Alex Delveaux, Aaron Dillon and Jordan Schmidt advanced to tomorrow’s finals. Also advancing is YSU’s Martin Soloman, and Detroit’s Aviram Campbell, Vincent Lefler and Steven Ivanics.

Michael Davis of YSU was .02 seconds off from having a new Horizon League record in the 100m dash during Saturday’s prelim, running a 10.63. Valpo’s Nick Kowaleski wasn’t far behind him with a time of 10.67. They will advance to tomorrow’s final in hopes of putting their name in the League record book.

In the men’s pole vault, Garrett Vetesnik won for the second year in a row. His height of 4.91m (16-01.25) earned Milwaukee another 10 points.

Butler went 1-2-3 in the men’s steeplechase. Kevin Oblinger took first place with 9:08.81, with Kodi Mullins and Craig Jordan finishing in 9:19.79 and 9:23.34, respectively.

Competition will resume on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. with women’s shot put as the first event. Running events (men’s 4x100m) start at 12:00 p.m.
