Women’s Soccer Results (Oct. 26)
Milwaukee 5, Cleveland State 0
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – It took some time for the Milwaukee women’s soccer team to get on track, but at the end, the result was the same – a share of the Horizon League regular season championship. Milwaukee took the No. 1 seed after a 5-0 victory over Cleveland State an Engelmann Stadium on Friday night.
Milwaukee (6-8-1, 5-2-0 Horizon) collected its 13th consecutive share of the Horizon League women’s soccer regular season championship, overcoming a 1-2-0 start to the conference season to roll off four straight wins to share the title with Detroit.
By virtue of the Panthers’ 2-0 win at Detroit on Sept. 27, Milwaukee collected the tie-breaker over the Titans and will host the League Championship on Friday, Nov. 2 and Sunday, Nov. 4. Detroit will be the No. 2 seed, as it was in 2011.
Cleveland State (6-11-0, 2-5-0 Horizon) will miss out on the six-team Horizon League Championship.
Milwaukee sealed the result with four first-half goals, including three in a 10:32 flurry. Sammy Vovos’ fourth goal of the year at the 4:01 mark proved to be the game-winner, with Krissy Dorre and Kelsey Holbert tallying assists.
The Panthers put away the match starting in the 26th minute, starting with consecutive goals by Krissy Dorre. Sara Stern’s centering pass led to Dorre’s fourth goal of the year, while Vienna Behnke set up Dorre’s goal at the 34:37 mark.
Kelsey Holbert closed the 10-minute stretch with her third goal of the year, shooting across the face of the goal to send Milwaukee into the half with a 4-0 lead.
Sara Zawacki closed the scoring in the 84th minute with her second goal of the season, as Callie O’Donnell laying the ball off after a feed from Vovos.
The remainder of the field will be set after tomorrow’s matches.
