Milwaukee Sweeps Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The reigning men’s and women’s Horizon League Indoor Champions – Milwaukee – were once again victorious.

On the final day of the 2012 championships, hosted by Youngstown State at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS), League and facility records fell and the Panthers walked away with the League trophy for the ninth consecutive season for the men and the fourth consecutive season for the women.

The men’s team garnered 125 points during the two-day competition. Loyola came in second with 98 points and Youngstown State finished third with 93 points. Butler (89) took fourth, while UIC (63), Valparaiso (30) and Detroit (29) rounded out the scoring.

In the heptathlon, Milwaukee went 1-2-3 with Dan Simon winning the title with 4,820 points. Defending champion Ben Crogan placed second with 4,711 and Drew Feuk ended with 4,629 points.

The Panthers also got help in the 60-meter hurdles when they swept spots 1-5.  Junior Durell Busby broke his own Horizon League record with a time of 7.82.

In the men’s high jump, Nick Hughes finished first with a leap of 2.01m (6-7) for a WATTS facility record. Teammates Crogan and Aaron Dillon finished in 3^rd and 5^th respectively in the competition.

Callum Hawkins, a freshman from Butler, set the Horizon League record in the men's 3000 and 5000-meter run with times of 8:16.50 and 14:15.55. Hawkins also won the Horizon League Cross Country title back in October.

Butler went 1-4 in the men's mile run, with freshman Tom Curr winning the title with a time of 4:07.62. Curr also won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.67. Both of Curr's times are new WATTS facility records.

The women’s team had a Horizon League record-breaking performance in the last event of the day (4x400 meter relay) and finished with a time of 3:51.07.  The win gave Milwaukee 10 more points and the Panthers ended their run with 137 and a strong finish to the competition.  The efforts of freshman Chelsea Maxey, seniors Erika Hanson and Calanetta Burrows and sophomore Lauren Grant beat last year’s record time of 3:51.79, also set by Milwaukee.

For the second straight year, Youngstown State took second place with 111 points and Butler was third with 82 points. Loyola finished fourth with 60, while UIC (58), Wright State (39), Detroit (24) and Valparaiso (16) followed.

The Horizon League Women's Field Athlete of the Year, Samia Taylor, won the triple jump title for the second-straight year with a jump of 12.08m (39-7.75).

In the women's 5000-meter run, two student-athletes broke the previous Horizon League record. Juniors Katie Clark (Butler) and Samanatha Hamilton (YSU), ran times of 16:23.75 and 16:40.23 to shatter the old record of 16:49.68 set last year by Milwaukee's Elise Sigg.

The NCAA Indoor Championships will be hosted March 9-10 in Boise, Idaho.

The 2012 Horizon League Outdoor Championships will be hosted by Milwaukee May 4-6.
