Milwaukee Captures Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships

Final Results

GENEVA, Ohio- Milwaukee captured both Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday at the GaReat Facility in Geneva, Ohio.The men capture their eighth straight title, while the women claim their fifth crown in six years.

Milwaukee (126.5 points) sailed past six League opponents on the men's side -- Detroit (97), Butler (93), Youngstown State (89.5), Loyola (53), Valparaiso (36) and UIC (32).

The Panthers (154 points) then rolled past seven conference foes on the women's side – Youngstown State (117), Butler (70), Loyola (56), Wright State (56), UIC (41.5), Detroit (23) and Valparaiso (9.5).

Nine Individual Horizon League Indoor Championship records were broken during the two-day event.

One the men’s side, Milwaukee sophomore Durell Busby ran a 7.96 in the 60-meter hurdles while Detroit senior Leslie Hanna notched a 46.92 in the 400 meter.

For the women, Wright State junior Cassandra Lloyd turned in an 8.35 in the 60-meter hurdles, Milwaukee senior Reigna Pierce leaped 5.96 meters in the long jump, UIC junior Kellie Schuh vaulted 3.80 meters in the pole vault, Milwaukee sophomore Elise Sigg ran a 16.49.68 in the 5,000 meter and a 9:43.97 in the 3,000 meter and Panther freshman Simbi Laaro recorded a 7.63 in the 60-meter dash.

Both 4x400 relay records were also broken at the GaReat Facility.

Detroit’s men’s team of Hanna, sophomore Joseph Raffin, senior Matthew Mahler, and sophomore Vincent Lefler broke the conference indoor record with a time of 3:15.58, while Milwaukee’s women’s team of junior Calanetta Burrows, freshman Lauren Grant, junior Erika Hanson and senior Angie Kaufman finished in 3:51.79.

Hanna was named Most Outstanding Running Performer on the men's side,while Valparaiso senior Jarrett Mickens earned Most Outstanding Field Performer accolades.

Hanna took first in the 200 meter (21.47), while Mickens placed first in the long jump (7.37), and triple jump (14.88).

Valparaiso freshman Julian Smithwas named Men's Running Newcomer of the Year, while Milwaukee freshman Nick Hughespicked up Field Newcomer of the Year honors.

Sigg was named Most Outstanding Running Performer on the women's side, while Pierce earned Most Outstanding Field Performer accolades.

Laaro was named Women's Running Newcomer of the Year, while Youngstown State freshman Katrina Rettburg earned Field Newcomer of the Year laurels.

Pete Corfeld, now in his 22nd season leading both Milwaukee track programs, was named Men's and Women's Coach of the Year for the 2011 indoor season.
