MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The second-fastest breaststroke swimmer in collegiate history.
That's the title University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee senior Emily McClellan achieved after finishing second overall in the 100 breaststroke at the NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center Friday.
"This is a pretty great day for Milwaukee," UWM head coach Kyle Clements said. "Great day for the school, great day for the program, great day for Emily. Over the past couple years we talked about progressing to this and we knew this was definitely something she was capable of, we just needed a couple things to fall our way and they did.
"You're not going to get a better swim. That's her best at this moment and so for her to do it here and on this stage is pretty exciting. We're looking forward to another really good one tomorrow."
McClellan nearly broke the American record in prelims with the fastest morning time of 57.81. She then topped that by posting the third-fastest time ever in this event in finals, touching the wall at 57.76, second only to Olympic medalist Breeja Larson. Larson rebroke her own American record in the event with a winning time of 57.23.
McClellan's time is also the new Milwaukee and Horizon League record.
Milwaukee now has 17 points at the meet, moving them into 29th place overall, ahead of 16 other universities.
With that finish, McClellan earns her first-ever First-Team All-American Award after a pair of All-American Honorable Mention finishes last season.
"I just wanted to go my best time and just get out there and race," McClellan said. "It's not often I get to race such great swimmers so I was excited just to be in a pool with them."
McClellan has one more event at the NCAA Championships, the 200 breaststroke. She is seeded fifth overall in the event. Prelims are set to start at 11 a.m.
