INDIANAPOLIS – Milwaukee sophomore Chia Okonkwo (Maple Grove, Minn.) has been named the Horizon League Women’s Track and Field Runner of the Week, while UIC junior Kellie Schuh (Crystal Lake, Ill.) has been selected the League’s Field Athlete of the Week, for the week beginning Feb. 14.
Both athletes competed at the UWM Panther Tune-Up in preparation for the upcoming Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships, each taking top honors in events.
Okonkwo broke the tape first in the 60 meter hurdles, running the event in 8.73 seconds to collect the win. The time was just .03 off her season best of 8.70 seconds, which ranks second in the Horizon League. The sophomore added a third-place result in the 60 meter dash just minutes later, running in 7.92 seconds.
Schuh set a new League standard for the indoor season in the pole vault, clearing 3.80 meters to best her competition. In the triple jump, Schuh put forth a personal-best leap of 11.86 meters to take first place in the event. The leap ranks fourth in the League this season.
Both student-athletes will be competing at the Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships, taking place Feb. 26-27, at the GaREAT Sports Complex in Geneva, Ohio. Coverage throughout the weekend will be available on HorizonLeague.com.
