Oakland and Wright State Advance to #HLSB Championship Game

No. 3 Wright State 5, No. 4 Green Bay 3

Green Bay got off to a hot start but Wright State fought back to claim the win, 5-3 in the first game on Saturday of the Horizon League Championship.

The Phoenix kicked off the contest with a lead-off double by Hailey Mohrfeld that ignited a three-run inning with Katelyn Huemmer and Miranda Spangberg each tallying RBIs.

Wright State would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning beginning with a Honnah Susor walk in which she would eventually cross the plate off of a single up the middle by Hanna Floyd. Paige Peterson then scored Floyd on a double to left field as the Raiders concluded the half inning with two runs on three hits but left three runners on base.

The Raiders continued to push on the gas at the plate in the fourth inning where they strung together five hits to score three runs to take a 5-3 lead.

Green Bay was led by Mohrfeld and Huemmer who each went 2-for-3 in the ballgame while Huemmer also picked up a RBI.

Susor and Peterson notched two hits, respectively, for Wright State in the team’s 10-hit outing. Jess Gorman knocked in two runs while going 1-for-3.’

Ashley Sharp collected the victory in relief for Montana Wear going 5.2 innings allowing just two hits and fanning four batters.

Wright State will face the loser of No. 1 Oakland versus No. 2 UIC in the nightcap at 3:30 p.m. ET.

One run in the bottom of the first inning proved to be enough for No. 1 Oakland to capture the win over No. 2 UIC and advance to the Horizon League Softball Championship game.

Jackie Kisman started the Oakland rally with a single to center field but was thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice off of a hit from Sarah Harley. Sara Cupp then singled to right field to advance Hartly all the way to third. Hartley didn’t stop there as she eventually scored on a throwing error during the play.

From the first inning on the contest revolved around the impressive pitching duel between UIC’s Elaine Heflin and Oakland’s Erin Kownacki. Both pitchers threw complete games without giving up an earned run. Heflin fanned nine batters and allowed just six hits and no walks in the loss. Kownacki threw a one-hit shutout with four strike outs for the win.

Oakland was led by the bat of Sara Cupp who went a perfect 3-for-3 while UIC’s Laura Swan notched the sole hit for the Flames.

No. 3 Wright State 6, No. 2 UIC 5

It took 11 innings and two days to determine which team would face No. 1 Oakland in the Horizon League Softball Championship final. Wright State senior Jess Gorman tabbed the game-winning RBI with a double to score Honnah Susor who reached base on a single to defeat No. 2 UIC, 6-5.
In the top of the ninth inning Friday evening, the game was suspended due to storms in the vicinity of the ballpark.

Each team got on the board early in the contest scoring multiple runs in the first inning. Wright State jumped out of the gate to score three runs on one hit while taking advantage of one error. However, UIC would counter at the bottom of the inning with three runs of its own on three hits and one error.

Wright State would take the lead in the second after Angie Clark doubled to left field and Susor tallied the RBI on a triple down the right field line.

The lead didn’t last for long as UIC crossed the plate again in the third and fourth innings to grab hold of a 5-4 lead.

The Raiders would then tie the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Kortney Tackett. Oakland or Wright State could not break the tie in regulation, causing the ballgame to go into extra innings.

Five UIC hitters notched two-hit ballgames while Elaine Heflin pitched a complete game in the loss allowing just seven hits and striking out four batters.

Ashley Sharp earned the win for Wright State going the distance with 11 hits and three fanned batters. Susor led the Raiders’ bats with a 3-for-5 outing crossing the plate twice and tabbing a RBI.
